On one hand, I can understand the "silent majority" as I was a large part of that up until a couple of weeks ago when I decided I wanted to start mapmaking (and found the mapmaking forum all but dead). I started to post things out of hope though that something actually will be done about the game and that things will be improved on.
I think in this regard people fall into one of two categories. The first wants a game similar to HOMM 3 (which I enjoyed greatly, first game of the series that I played and I loved it.). I suppose this is what I see all over the forum as the "old" and "loyal" fans. The second is much more ambivalent about the exact mechanics, but wants a good game in general. Keep in mind this is just what I think I've seen, and you may or may not agree.
For my part, I think I fall into the second category. I enjoy HOMM VI. I think *most* of the changes are fun and make the game work, although some are implemented very poorly (i.e skill trees). I think if some of them were tweaked they could be much better. For example, my favorite part of heroes 4 and 5 was the character development. I would start a new game with a build in mind, and would spend the game having a blast creating the hero. You can't really do that in VI as everything looks the same late game.
However, I think there are already some very good things. The map editor, if you have the patience to figure it out, is incredibly powerful, and I think that if the game does improve through patches/expansions we will see much more content from both ubisoft and the community.
