Thread: Aircraft maintenance vo-tech student dies in VT | Forums

  1. #1
Just found out about this morning that a 19yo kid who was going to a vocational technical school here at the airport studying to be an aircraft mechanic was killed Wednesday morning. It appears he died due to injuries from a hangar door possible malfunction during closing.

As some of you may know..aircraft hangar doors aren't exactly small.

My sympathy goes out to his family....

Then that company is in big trouble.
It seems that the safety meganisme didn't work.

I work in areas where there are big doors.
You can easily stand between or under them, so the moment the door touches you it immediatly goes goes the other way again.

But I believe such big hangar doors don't come down fast. Unless there was a fault ofcourse.
Company accidents are the worst of its kind.

If practice makes perfect and nobody's perfect, why do we practice

i goto a similar school in atlanta ga and to answer your statement hanger doors are huge. but the one thing i dont understand is that 99.9% of the hanger doors ive seen open and close horizontally not vertically so how he died is a mystery to me. if u got time could u put up a link to the article on this for me please and my thoughts and prayers go to his family as well

yah, was wondering about type of hangar too...isn't it slightly nuts to keep this sort of mechanisms around? You'd expect they'd upgrade such vital systems as hangar doors, no ?

I dunno....most individuals would MOVE when a door is closing...It aint no elevator door, you can't stick your hand in there and make it open again....
