SH4: Sub crashes and dies every time I submerge to periscope depth

Hello everyone. I have been playing SH4 for about 3 months now, off and on. Problem I have is that, all of a sudden, the sub dies when ever I submerge to periscope depth. This happens regardless of the cir****tances, whether I'm stationary in the middle of the ocean with nothing around or not. It doesn't matter. Also, the game seems to be taking a long time to load, (up to 2 minutes) and the computer is only 6 months old, so that shouldn't be the issue. I just downloaded all 4 patches but have not installed them yet. Will that fix the issue?

    Thanks

Which version of the game do you have? If you have v1.5 of SHIV you don't need the patches. If you have v1.0 of the game you only need to install the v1.4 patch as it contains everything from the previous patches.

Might be a good idea to list your computer specs also.

BTW, Welcome to the SH Forums.

    Hello Gordo737,

    Welcome

First thing to do is update your version to 1.4. It will fix a few of the problems you were having.
To see which version you have, go to the main page and look to the bottom right and you will see the version number.

The game taking sometime to load maybe a few things. Do you save often in the game? Do you use a new file name for the new save? Saving with a new name each time helps load times.

Install the patch and take it for a run and let us know what happens.

    Loaded 1.3 and 1.4

I installed the patches for 1.3 and 1.4. Unfortunately, I could no longer load the game I'd been saving.Iit gave me a "load error". I had it saved twice (once as a backup) and was able to load the backup file, but all of my contributions to the war effort (ie: ships I'd sunk) were no longer listed. So, I guess I can start over again, but it is somewhat frustrating. Not sure what the problem was, perhaps just a corrupted file of some sort. I won't really know if I've cured it until I'm at the same level of the game again...I guess. I'll repost when I get to that point.

    Any comments?

Did you have Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific installed in the default locations - Program Files (86), if so this maybe the problem with the patches.
If you are going to re-install, go to My Document/SH4 and make a backup of this folder. It has all your saved games in it. Then un-install the game.
Next run a registry cleaner. Next install the game into a new folder you have made like Games or something else. Just don't install it in Program Files (86).
Try running it then and if it works then add patch 1.4 (1.4 patch contains all the previous versions). Then see what happens.

I tried what you said, but the problem is still there. It even started doing it when I was playing one of the other "saved" games. Both times, around the May timeframe, the problem would occur. What next?

Once you patch to a new version you can not use an older save. Did you add the 1.4 patch when you were in the Office? Old saves will not work. You have to start a new patrol from the Office.
You may just want to try starting a new career after updating to 1.4

WOW...I think I figured it out. If so, then it is more a case of user error than a game bug. I noticed, on the mechanical page, the term "hull" with the number 99 beside it. So, I ordered a dive to PD and lo and behold, the number changed to 100 and I died...again. Some more research revealed that the only way I could get the number to 0 was to return to my home port for dry dock level repairs. This would, of course, cancel the mission which would be considered an incomplete, but this also is more logical as compared to things in the real world. I also learned about picking and assigning the crew. I'm sure there's an official instruction booklet/file around somewhere that explains all this.

Thanks everyone for the input in helping me solve this problem.

So you got damage while out on patrol. That makes sense.
Glad to hear you are back up and on patrol again.

    Happy Sailing Captain.
