I just started playing again over the past week or so. I took several months off from SH4 to play a few other games, Dragon Age and Tropico 3 mostly. I tend to bounce back between games with quick action / rewards, and slower strategic games like SH4. I can not find a good medium between the two.

I am trying out OTC 1.5 on top of TMO 2.5, without RSRD, and playing without map contacts. It definitely is a change, I am not sure I like OTC but I am going to give it some more time.

I have started about 4 or 5 careers and given up because I did something stupid. My patience has not readjusted to SH4. In my last one, I made a pretty nice attack on a small freighter that sighted me on the surface but I was able to close after submerging and got one hit out of two fired. I usually have problems with rapidly zigging targets, but I think the OTC mod might have helped me with the quick set up.

But the one torpedo was only enough to set it on fire for about 30 minutes, then it went out and I was trailing directly behind the target which had stopped zigging. From about 1000 yds I got one more front tube ready for an up the tailpipe shot. I could see it was presenting a very tiny angle to the right, not quite 180. So I fired, and saw the torpedo take a pretty bad jog to the right. Frustrated, I ticked the AOB back over to 180, fired another, and watched it pull right too. At that point I broke off the chase, got frustrated and closed the game.

Next day I was sitting around thinking what in the world went wrong and if I should start yet another career. It dawned on me that the first two torpedoes I fired at the freighter were a spread, and the last one had a 1.5 degree right gyro setting. I forgot to turn it back. SMH.

Was recently upgraded from a Tambor to a Balao in Dec 42, first encounter just south of Truk was a four ship convoy inline...two escorts, one in front the other bringing up the rear. The convoy consisted of a Nagara in the lead, followed by a Zimbu, Heito, Zimbu.

I decided to use all six forward tubes, three at the Nagara and three at the Zimbu right behind it. It was midday calm seas with no cloud cover. The lead escort passed my bows without detection at a range of about 2,000yds so figured I was going to have a easy shooting gallery.

I ID'd the Zumba and fired off the three fish, went to ID and fire at the Nagara but at such close proximity the Zimbu salvo was halfway to the target before the Nagara fish were released. As the Zimbu blew up and sank, the now alerted Nagara was able to avoid all but one torpedo.

While trying to keep up with the damaged Nagara, the two escorts (I never ID'd but appeared to be sub chaser types) hounded me good. After about 45min real time I gave up on the wounded Nagara and evaded the escorts to resume my travels to my assigned area in the Bismark Sea.

Sorry that I didn't take any screenies....but it seemed like an ordinary attack, nothing special. Well accept that my plans didn't work out.
Nice effort! Getting the timing down is tough. The Mark 14 is ideal because your first salvo can be fired at the low speed setting and the second on high.

Incidentally, did Duke ever fix the Tambor bug?

(again this is STS1Thndrb-low) I too ahve just taken back to the Pacific. I did just notice that the merchant spawn rate is REALLY high. Namely, I got underway on my second war patrol in the Pike on 27 January, then by 17 February was back in port with 40k tonnage and no torpedoes, I do like how the convoys are pretty accurate as far as formations, but the part that sucks is that unless you are Multiplayer there doesn't seem to be any other submarines in the Pacific theatre.

Now I do play vanilla with wolfpack, is there any highly recommended mods out there that require a computer science degree to use?

I've unfortunately been rather far away from the Pacific. Just got back from quite the opposite infact; a dirty, sand encrusted mineral sands mine.

Shall have to try get my feet wet again...

You need to crawl out of your hole. For me, I've been getting my head in the clouds with Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey. I still make sure I visit the Pacific.
