I have been playing around with the blue notes and the Harmonic minor scale, i was thinking that the way i was arranging the notes it kinda sounded like it was from Egypt , i was wondering if anyone could tell me a better scale to use for writing a Egyptian sounding song , Other than the Harmonic minor scale , Im wanting to write a song that makes me feel like im floating down the Nile river , any tips would be much appreciated.

The Egyptian scale is the same as a minor Pentatonic, but you start on a different root:

in G, the Egyptian scale:

E|--3----5-----
B|--3------6---
G|2------5-----
D|--3----5-----
A|--3----5-----
E|--3----5-----

My favorite of the exotic scales is the Double Harmonic, again in G

E|2-3--4-------
B|--3--4-------
G|-----4-5-----
D|-----4-5-6---
A|2--3---5-----
E|---3-4-------

It is not an economical vertical scale, but it has a great etheral sound when playing over the right chords, like G Maj, G Maj 7, bA Maj, bA Maj 7, bA min, bA min 7, B Maj, B min, C min, and bE aug.

I have a couple questions , i was wondering how is it that you can list all the right chords , is their a simple way of knowing what chords go with what scale ? and one last question , you wrote out a few chords for me to try with that scale and i was having trouble figuring out a few of the chords you linked. what does it mean with a lower case b before a chord you wrote bA min, bE aug

i understand the aug i understand adding a 7th im just not 100% on the lower case b i was thinking it was just meaning minor but why would it say bA min this to me looks like it says minor A minor but that cant be right i must be missing something .

lower case b means flat. You have A A# and Ab if you look at a piano it's pretty easy to describe. Each scale has 8 degrees. If you're in E major you have 4 notes that are sharped to make the scale sound major. Those sharps are F C G and D. Now if you were going to play a scale in E major you would have to play a major scale progression which is I ii iii IV V vi vii* and I again. Soooo if E is the first chord in the scale then you play E major f minor g minor A major B major c minor and d diminished then back to E major

Let's do the G major scale now. We know that the major scale HAS to be I ii iii IV V vi vii* I So then we start on our first scale degree or chord (the one the key is named after)
I or first scale degree is major so our first chord is G major. Now the second scale degree is ii and is minor. so in alphabetical order from G to G we take GABCDEFG and the 2nd letter in the list is our 2nd scale degree and in order to make the scale sound major the 2nd scale degree has to be minor to create the right sound gap.
Now we have G Major, then a minor...can you figure out the rest on your own? I just want to see if you understand me and I'm not confusing you.

Nah every major scale is the same thing I ii iii IV V vi vii* if you are using chords. if you are using single notes then there are no sharps or flats in C major. You would use augmented 7th when you want to change the sound of a scale for a moment. Jazz music uses a lot of augmented chords.

so if we always use I ii iii IV V vi vii for the major scale i assume that the Double Harmonic scale would use a different progression?
