I installed the game and the patch. but when i hit start game it opens up a command window and says updating direct x then it restarts my computer. has done it every time. what should i do?

Try downloading DirectX directly here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35. Let us know if this does not help.

I try this and it says I already have a newer version. Do I need that exact Direct X in order to play?

game should run on dx9 or higher.
now it depends on your card also..and windows,,but that shouldnt matter...
go uninstall dx and go for a full reinstall,,,,,,,if you have windows 7,dx11,,,,,,,,,if you have vista,dx 10,,but it will be automatic....so that wont matter also.
