We are planning this huge celebration for several things that are happening in our family this year... we are having a disco and I have to work out a play list for the dj.

What songs - old and modern do you like to dance to and get everyone up and grooving?

Well, if it isn't all disco, some of Richard Marx's songs are always good for slow dancing. Also, I personaly love the song Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls

Can we all say Motown? Temps, Marvin The Late Great Gaye, and the Four Tops. Now thats dancing to a boogie beat. ...Disco look no further then Diane Summer, who puts it all down with a mean beat. ..or the Bee Gees..and my isn't he still cute!
...and slow dancing...Patsy Cline (any ballat) or again Marvin Gaye singing "Sexual Healing"

Met Marvin once at a nightclub in LA about 100 years ago..the temps were there backing him up..it was a private party..and he sang to me...right there at my table!!! I almost fainted...forgot all bout my then BF, for Marvin had this voice and smile that is missed. ...just some trivia folks.

Blues! Very groovy! And you'd have to be dead to not be able to dance to it! But it's a disco theme, eh? I would say lean heavily toward Funk. Here are some Funk and Pop suggestions:

    Lipps, Inc. (Funkytown)
    Chic (Good Times)
    Commodores (Brick House)
Gap Band (Let it Whip, Let's Groove Tonight, Ride the White Horse)
Cheryl Lynn (Got to Be Real)
Chakka Kahn (I Feel for You)
    Heatwave (Grooveline)
KC and the Sunshine Band (Get Down Tonight)
    Lakeside (Fantastic Voyage)
Michael Jackson (Don't Stop til you Get Enough, Jam, PYT, Thriller)
    Sister Sledge (We Re Family)
Tavares (Heaven Must be Missing an Angel is one of my favorite songs of all time!)
Billy Preston (Will it go Round in Circles)
Prince (or whatever he's known as now -- almost anything, but especially Kiss!)
Madonna (again, almost anything she recorded in the 80's and 90's is danceable, but i love Vogue and Express Yourself)
Patti Austin (The Ability to Swing)
Vicky Sue Robinson (Turn the Beat Around)
Wild Cherry (Play that Funky Music)
    LTD (Back in Love Again)
    Amii Stewart (Knock on Wood)
Christina Aguilera (Come on Over, Lady Marmalade -- though you may like Patti LaBelle better)
    Anastasia (I'm Outta Love)
Five (When the Lights go Out)

Those are some things I always enjoyed dancing to (when i used to go out dancing ). I hope it helps! Your party sounds like it will be fun!

Are you hiring a DJ? If so no need to make a list. If he (or she) is a true professional they'll know what they're doing. Just tell 'em a style of music you'll want and he should bring plenty to choose from.

So far the suggestions look like a 'best of the eighties' with some seventies and nineites thrown in.
