Sorry, Uss Spikefish. I was just trying to help you to correctly identify those birds, and the Pileated woodpeckor just does not have a white breast. Since I don't know where you live, I added many species and since I really can't see much more than a white belly on those birds in your picture, it is hard for me to identify them. According to my book, if you say the only other bird it can be is the Red Headed Woodpeckor, my book indicates that this bird and the Red-Bellied has a year round range that encompasses (pretty much) the entire eastern half of the U.S. from a little west of the Mississippi. The Downy's year round range covers almost the entire continental U.S. as does the Hairy Woodpeckor (which I forgot to mention in my haste).

    Hairy Woodpeckor:

Last summer, i had a problem with a wood****** trying to peck its way into the bird's house on my balcony. It was clearly fishing for the young birds inside every time the parent birds were out looking for food. Spent my entire holidays with guarding that bird's house and scaring Woodie Wood****** off.

Grabbed me a webcam and placed it so that i could keep an eye on the bird's house from my computer desk. The wood****** came by everyday at least once (and that at constantly changing times of the day), and often even several times a day. At one point he managed to open up quite a hole into the house within just seconds but Celeon was still fast enough to prevent him from getting hold of any little baby bird inside. Closed the hole with a little piece of wood so he had to start all over again next time.

In the end, and after almost two weeks of constant attacks, he gave up and all the little birds survived and flew off into the forest with their parents a few days later.

That wood****** was really smart. He clearly remembered the location of the bird's house although there a dozens of similar looking balconies on my apartment house. AND it almost felt as if he was actively trying to come back at different times , .... maybe to check out whether im present to protect the house all day long. There is something to the claim that some bird species come right after dolphins and apes in terms of intelligence. Smarter than dogs or cats although their brains are smaller.

EDIT : ****** is a dirty word in english ? You've got to be kidding me LOL

It means the same thing as the short form of Richard O'Kanes first name. Just another slang term.

The Pileated Woodp*e*c*k*e*r is still around. Took this yesterday.

The other day we had high winds coming in from the North so we had a Freighter stay in the bay overnight to get out of the winds. I am guessing but that Freighter is about 700 ft (213 m) long.

He can swat a fly between those ears. I'm going to try and post photos of him each month so we can all follow his growth progression.
