It's actually the KA 80 "Howler" Gunship in game as this is based a few years into the future but it was clearly based strongly off of that real life one.

Anyways you aren't playing the skirmish mode of the game are you? Just making sure as the barracks is only available in the theater of war mode and the solo campaign modes.

As for which are best the process is purely cumulative there are no trees that you can pick while blocking off others you just buy them all eventually, that being said you will want to get the first cheapest level of each category, attack, defense, mobility, ability(gunship wont have this one) and by the time you finish those you should learn how the units work and be able to judge which categories will be most vital to upgrade first. Generally speaking you will want to get the first level of upgrades for all your units first before going into the second and higher levels with the exception of the riflemen and maybe CV and engineer ability paths.
