Silent Vanguard: The Recon
GRO Intel Series
Agility and stealth characterize the reconnaissance Ghost. Like its real-world counterparts, the Recon is outfitted as a scout, with weaponry and technologies that support its battlefield role. The Recon is lightly armored and not intended to be a front line soldier, but rather an information gathering long range assassin or close range skirmisher. This write-up will provide some insight on the technologies that inspired the Recon’s battlefield technology, and their common field applications.
The battlefield is a dangerous place, and avoiding detection is a crucial part of a Recon’s capacity to stay alive and complete the mission objective. To achieve this, the Recon is knitted with two of the latest Field Special Augmented Technologies (FSATs): The “Cloak” Active Camouflage System and the Oracle Digital Interrogator suite.
Recent developments in active camouflage influence the design of the “Cloak” ACS. Metamaterial research into materials like carbon nanotube sheets had shown impressive results by bending light around a thin sheet of the metamaterial, rendering it effectively invisible. Such a technology could potentially allow the infiltration of a soldier behind enemy lines, allowing them to take out an asset that would be costly to eliminate in a frontal assault.
In Ghost Recon, an exceptional sniper may be covering a primary access path, terminating any soldier who tries to get through. Ordinarily, a frontal assault would be suicide, with the objective of eliminating the sniper coming at the cost of a large number of soldiers. With the Cloak ACS, a Recon may slip past the defensive line and discreetly eliminate threats behind enemy lines, paving the way for a breakthrough.
The Oracle Digital Interrogator was designed to counter the stealth Recons, and to get advance notice of enemy presence. The Future Force Warrior is highly network-centric, with live updates of personnel locations even in hot zones. Recent advances in handheld motion sensing technology have allowed motion sensing through walls, and ongoing research is in progress on sensing motion in 3D space. Incorporating such concepts create a Digital Integrator that can temporarily tap into the enemy location updates and track their movements, becoming a veritable Oracle that reveals any hidden combatants.
In close quarters, entering an unsecured space can be a daunting experience. Enemy presence is an unknown factor that can quickly turn an entry into a trip to the mortuary. In such a situation, an Oracle equipped Recon can scan the area for enemies in advance; giving their squad intel on lurking enemies while revealing even cloaked Recons in the path of an Oracle sweep. For the sniper Recon, the Oracle is an invaluable tool in spotting cloaked Recons attempting to flank, or even to anticipate the movements of an enemy secure behind heavy cover.
