Can not save game in Riven

Running Riven on HPDV6 with windodws 7. Game runs good but I can't save the game. Have to start a new game each time I load in. Installation is from 10th anniversary DVD I'm using quicktime 4.12. Carole

    Hello,

How do you start your game ?

    a) Through a play shortcut created on your desktop ? (Riven.exe)

    b) Or through the installation splashscreen/play ? (if using this one it won't play a saved game unless you wait to be in the game and then using the menu, you could load a saved game)

In both cases, wait until you are in the game to load a saved game.

The saved games are located inside the Riven folder (need to be pointed and clicked to be loaded).

It is recommanded you choose your own title for a saved game. ("Save as" in the menu)

One way to view/access the menu(Top of screen on the left side) is to use the Ctrl key + space bar. (There are other options)

Btw, do not try to save a game while seing an animated scene. Backoff or wait until it finished.

I've tried opening the game both ways.

OK. I did all this and it still won't take my save command. This is true under all the choices in the menu. If I choose the open command it asks if I want to save the current place in the game. Then if I say yes, it doesn't. I can't find any place on my computer that it has been saved.

When closing a session save your game as per Images 2 & 3 below and when clicking exit the game, it will ask if you want to save the same game, click "NO". When coming back for a new session, use the Starting window (image #1) to choose a saved game.

    Heimdall_G's instructions

Riven game progress is manually saved by placing the game's cursor at the top left corner of the Riven screen, clicking once to display the taskbar (or pressing Ctrl-Spacebar), then clicking on File > Save or Save as.

The Riven game progress save path can be set from the screen shown by opening the Riven taskbar and clicking on File > Save as. This is the "Save As" screen that has the Save in: box on it. Click on the down arrow at the right end of the Save in: box, then select the folder in which to save game progress by clicking as necessary in the resulting drop-down menu.

The best save path is C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Riven. Save files are in .rvn format.

    Serie of 3 images
    Image # 1 > riven start window

Image # 2 > How to save window

Image # 3 > "Save as" directly opens the Riven Folder in Program Files. This is where the games are saved and where you have to type a title of your choice. If you look carefully at the first image, small menu on the right, to load a saved game you can click on "Start Saved game" and it will take you to Image # 3 again for you to click a choice for a saved game

    Something to be clarified
You said you were using QT version 4.1.2. Is it because Bill is using it for the Myst ME game ?

The QT version that comes with the Riven DVD is 6.3.

For Riven I personnaly use QT version 6.5.2 as recommanded by Heimdall_G.

If ever you decide to use the QT 6.3 version from the DVD, you first will have to delete the older 4.1.2 version before installing another version.

Thank you for all the information and the time you spent sending it to me. However, I've done all this, and I know how to save a game. The problem is the system does not react to either the save or the save as command. When I click on "save or save as" nothing happens. I went to the area in "Riven data" and there are no saved games.

    I appreciate all your help.

You've previously seen this, but it bears repeating. In general,
    1. Install Riven to your C: drive.
-- a. Be certain that Riven saves its game progress files to your C: drive.
-- b. If you have a very small C: that's reserved for system files only, install Riven to D:. Be certain that Riven saves its game progress files to D:.
    2. Start Riven from a fresh boot.
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with **full Administrator privileges** (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications. (Open the Control Panel, and select User Accounts. Your User Name should show Administrators under Group.)
-- b. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs running in the background.
-- c. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it.
-- d. Do NOT run any other programs before starting Riven.
    3. Never boot up with a CD or DVD in the disc drive.
    4. If the Riven disc autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
    5. Always start Riven with the Desktop shortcut/start icon, NOT from the CD menu.

Always start Riven as per steps 2 through 5, and especially ALL of step 2.

    Please answer the following questions:

    1. Why are you using QuickTime 4.1.2 with Riven?

    2. Did you install Riven using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter?

    3. Have you tried ALL of the Program Compatibility options for Riven?

    4. Do you get any error messages when running Riven, and if so, what's the exact wording?

    5. Are you having problems saving from any other program(s), including from your Web browser?

    6. In the past couple of days, have you used the Win 7 Disk Cleanup utility (or a comparable utility) to remove unnecessary "stuff" from your hard disk, especially Web browser caches?

    Heimdall G,

As far as I can tell, she has complied with all of your above recommendations.

Answers to your five questions (so far):

    1) We [were] using QuickTime 4.1.2 with Riven because that was what was required to enable the video sequences. However now we are using QT 7.7.1 with the "quicktime.qts" file in the Riven Folder. Similarly the Myst Masterpiece folder now has "quicktime.qts" installed and also plays the video sequences, but the sound is very noisy. (I described finding and installing that file in my thread.) We updated QT to the latest version for compatibility with iTunes, which would not open with QT 4.1.2 installed.

    2) The Program Compatibility Troubleshooter was a dead end for us. It asks what type of problem exists, but does not address our issue at all. We did not find it helpful.

    3) No, we tried only Windows 7, Windows XP/2000, Windows 98/ME, and Windows 95. Without the "quicktime.qts" file in the game folder(s), no videos would play with any of those compatibility settings.

    4) No error messages appear when attempting to Save or Save As in Riven; the dialogue box just disappears, and nothing happens. However, for MME, we DO get an error message: "GetSaveFileName returned Error #2."

    5) No problem saving files from any programs other than MME and Riven, i.e. Myst III: Exile files save just fine, Word files save, etc. Web browser downloads can be saved to her hard disk with no problem also.

    6) No, she has not used that utility. (The hard disk is a 620 GB size and I think she has about 4 GB on it.) If you are recommending that utility because it can "mysteriously" (no pun intended) fix OS/app incompatibility, we could try it. I did notice that downloading it requres "Silverlight" to be downloaded first, and she does not have that on her computer.

Thank you, Nanouk. We just checked "Disable Visual Themes" on the MME Properties on her desktop but have yet to attempt opening MME (cat is on her lap). Currently she is running QuickTime 7.7.1 Pro on that computer under Windows XP, with "quicktime.qts" in the MME folder. With QT 6.5.2 installed, both MME and Riven worked perfectly. But after updating from 6.5.2, MME will not open at all, and gives that error message, although Riven still works fine. We will try checking the "Disable visual themes" on both the desktop and the laptop... maybe we will eventually get there on both computers.

(What a contrast with my Mac G5, running Mac OS X 10.4.11 with Classic... I have both games on my hard disk, no CD or DVD required, and both play perfectly!)
