Unhappy 10th Anniversary DVD: Problems with MME and Riven on Two Computers

The 10th Anniversary DVD Edition has problems on both of wife's computers.

    1) Desktop: Fry's FM-40 running Windows XP, 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 2.5 GB RAM, 120 GB hard disk, EVGA nVidia 6200 AGP graphics card.
    2) Laptop: Hewlett-Packard Pavilion DV6-6145DX/A8-350 running Windows 7 64-bit, AMD A8 Vision 2.8 GHz Quad Core CPU, 8 GB RAM, AMD Radeon graphics, 620 GB hard disk.

The 10th anniversary DVD apps MME and Riven were installed on both computers using the QuickTime version and the DirectX version on the DVD.

    Here are the problems:

On the desktop computer, Riven plays perfectly in Windows 95 compatibility mode. Myst Masterpiece, however, opens to a black screen; audio but no video.

On the laptop, both Myst and Riven will run, but without any movies, i.e. movies are simply skipped.Any help would be appreciated!

Why can't I see my text in my post above? It looks fine in "Edit" mode; I've tried other colors besides "Automatic," but none work. The text has to be selected in order to read it! Also, all my paragraphs have been deleted and the entire thing is run-on with no breaks! Editing doesn't fix that!

    Thanks for your reply!

Yes, QT was removed before the version on the DVD (6.3) of QuickTime was installed. I guess we will try version 6.5.2 as recommended by Heimdall G. plus the other items he listed in your link. Thanks!

    You are welcome !

Just tested QT 6.5.2 with MME and it is working. (but no water/sea animation like in my GOG(Good Old Game) RealMyst version.

For fun, I call the QT 6.5.2 my "universal version" for old games.

    Angry Same Problem

Wife spent hours performing all the recommended steps (on the desktop running Windows XP) by Heimdall G in nanoukmetal's link, but the result was exactly the same as before, when using QT version 6.3 on the DVD. No change at all. Audio works, video is black. This is using QT 6.5.2.

Could this have anything to do with the AGP graphics card, which is a EVGA nVidia 6200? But Riven runs perfectly, and also Uru. Only MME has this problem.

    Angry Oops...

Wife just discovered that her "Uninstall" of QT will not work. When the Uninstall program for QuickTime is selected, an error message pops up saying that an application that uses QuickTime is running and it needs to be closed. But there is NOT ANY program running except the Uninstaller itself... I hate it when computer messages lie.

So she restarted her computer and NOW it says QT 6.5.2 (at least the QT player) is the installed version. The computer's messages are not making any sense.

Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and go to the second tab "processes". Check to see if there is a Quick Time process running. If yes, click the end process box down below.

To check QT version click start menu/All programs/Quick Time/Open Quick Time player/last tab is ?/last option "About Quick time"/in the next window you should see the quick time version.

Due to possible corrupted installation, I suggest you delete any QT on computer and reinstall 6.5.2

    Nanoukmetal,

We did everything you suggested in your last message. We observed a correct installation of QT 6.5.2, and confirmed that. Riven still plays perfectly, but MME still opens to a black screen, and now there is NO sound at all. We also get the error message "myst.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. We do see Windows shift to 640x480 before the screen goes black. We have complied with everything in the MME Read Me file, i.e. using Windows 98/ME compatibility, unchecking the "Run in 256 colors" box (since the Read Me indicates using 24-bit colors), and checking the 640x480 box.
