I can easily get over the colour scheme and unrealistic action sequences, but it's the poor characterisation and scripting that will make me want to put my head through the wall. I'm worried that this movie will reduce the very real struggle of these men to a cheap cliche.

They may have gotten some 322-nd P-51 markings correct, but they blew pretty much everything else.
The B17-s they are escorting have markings of 8-th Airforce based in England, not those of 15-th AF based in Italy.

The Bf-109 markings are just as silly, with pre war swastika, that silly phantasy yellow horisontal band on the vertical stab, and the 3rd SS Panzer Division insignia on some planes.

I dont think they cared .. and in the end does it really matter? I remember in "Hell cats of the Pacific" .. a classic .. with The Duke.. The Helcats became P-47s for some of the shots ... no one noticed.. or in the original TA .. when "Cappy" crashed ... the P-51 changed ... These things are details that most would not notice or care about .. but it is important that they get the 332nd markings right .. and they did.. even though I am sure we wont see all the squadron markings.. At least they were able to get the right type of 109s ... in the original and in many other "classic" filsm they used the Spanish ones..
You do know that that event happened ... granted the original ship was not bristling with guns like that one was ... it was an Italian destroyer and in all likely hood it was just a lucky shot that hit the ammo mag and it mayh have even been a converted destroyer IIRC .. Also the planes were not P-51s but P-47 razorbacks.. cast offs from the Checkertails after they transitioned to Mustangs.. I think they only had them in June of 44 give or take a few weeks on either side of the month..
think the first script was scratched .. the one they used was either the second or third... I will be seeing this film tomorrow morning at 1000 so .... I'll holler back. There is a 0001 showing tonight .. but I want to actually enjoy the movie ...

Saw the film this morning..
It had it's cliches ... the lead German had a scar ... and there were all the cliche characters.. the hot dog .. the stoic leader .. the troubled leader .. etc etc.. and yes some of the aerial scenes were suspect ... but then again I remember seeing an episode of Dogfights where a Mustang pilot claimed to have done the exact maneuver .. and in this film a 109 did it as well.. Without spoiling ... I enjoyed the film.. which should surprise no one .. but over all, even if I were not me with my history as far as the Redtails go, just as a warbird lover this film was a good deal. If you are looking to be entertained you will be. If you want a historically accurate treatise (although of course there is some history here ....) ... read a book.
The sets were great ... really put you in the mood... they didn't concentrate on the racism... it was a factor, which it should ave been but it was well done.. not too heavy handed. The sounds were good..the acting was kind of enhh from some of the actors .. and in one his accent kept trying to break through .. but then I said to myself well maybe he is from SC... Overall I'd give it a B-

That's encouraging, Bearcat. I think it's unrealistic to expect 100% historical accuracy out of a medium intended to entertain rather than educate (but then I wonder... can't they do both?). As someone pointed out in an earlier thread; as long as it isn't horrible and faithful to the period I can forgive some historical inaccuracy, especially if there's a chance it'll bring some new blood to the IL-2 series.
My father and I had intended to go see this together as we're both avid WW2 buffs but he passed just before Christmas and I'm not sure I want to see it alone. Maybe I'll ask Mom...hmmm....I think I will.

B-25/PBJ Precision Ordinance Delivery Manual
I thought the film was "alright". The "cliches" killed it for me. If I'd wanted cliches I'd a put "Air Force" or "God is my Co-Pilot" in the DVD. It wasn't the worst I'd seen but for 50 some odd million I expected more. Not special effects, those were "fine" I wanted a story. I enjoyed the HBO movie far more, maybe because it was the first, but all in all the film left me flat. There was polite applause afterwards but that was about it. It was "okay" and I was hoping for so much more. It was far superior to "The Red Baron" about on par with "Fly Boys" no where in the neighborhood of "12 O'Clock High" or "Command Decision", but I'm jaded. I enjoyed the 2nd scene in the Officers Club the most it was funny, sad and poignant all at the same time. My greatest test of a film is if it can stand a 2nd viewing and sadly this could not BUT if it's a choice between 'Red Tails" and no air film at all, gimme this every time. "C+" grade from me

PS I met the woman who produced and filmed the great documentary "Red Tailed Angels" about a week ago, she didn't even know that "Red Tails" existed... Can't wait to get her thoughts.
Yeah Worf I was thinking C- B+ myself.. I enjoyed it though .. and I am actually going to see it again today because the wife wants to see it.. When I saw the German guy and he took off his mask and had that scar I said to myself... A scar??!! Really??!! Well he's a German officer circa 1940s .. so he's got to have a scar .... I bet he got it in a duel too... At least he didn't wear a monocle .. Oh wait .. he was a pilot.. I gave it a B+ over a C- though because to me it was entertaining... in spite of the cliches and some of the bad acting.. The sets were well done .. and while some of the special effects were over the top (a bit heavy on the explosions .. a few shots of the same bomber from a different angle at a different time that I caught.. ) Overall I enjoyed the film.. It was close, just a little less to what I expected...
This movie was OUTSTANDING. i give it 10 stars, this is by far one of the greatest movies ever, made.
