Thread: I know I have a corrupt file... | Forums

The Uru installation hangs when installing dat_0093. I can copy all the other files from the disk onto my harddrive except for dat_0093. The error message I get when I attempt to do so says, "This file is corrupt." So. I know there must be something I can do. I'd really hate to never be able to play this game because my disk is corrupted. I've tried cleaning it and it doesn't do any good. Can I download a replacement for that file? or maybe Resource1.zip entirely?

It's possible that you have a defective Uru disc, but it's more likely that at least one of the following are the problem:
-- A process or application running in the background is interfering.
-- Your hard drive has a problem.
-- You have a malware infestation.
-- The Uru disc needs to be cleaned.
-- The laser lenses on your CD drive need to be cleaned.

Also note that at least 3 GB of hard disk free space is required to install Uru, with a minimum of 10 GB being much better.

Read Uru: Saving Game Progress, then try the following in the order shown:

    1. Make certain that the Uru CD is absolutely free of smudges, fingerprints, any sort of haze, etc. Don't just look at the disc and say "yeah, clean". Actually clean the disc using either water-clear (additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green color) rubbing alcohol or a warm mild detergent solution. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth using a center-outward motion, not circular around the disc. Remove any deep scratches on the disc using one of the repair kits available at CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, et al.

    2. Over time, the laser lenses in your CD drive can build up a coating which fouls up drive read operation, particularly if:
-- You live in a dusty area.
    -- There's a smoker in the house.
-- You don't have a vent hood over your kitchen stove or cooktop.
-- You use burning-candle or plugin (oil-dispersing) room deodorizers.

Using a CD laser lens cleaning disc can help. This is essentially a CD with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones (especially for smokers, non-hooders, and candle burners/oilers) come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. Run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession, as a first pass.

    3. First, do steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

Then, install Uru from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing Uru, "5. Installing Original Uru: Ages Beyond Myst" in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Since you haven't been able to play the game, you don't need to do steps 5b and 5o (saving and restoring game progress).

I keep my computers in good health:
    -I defrag regularly
-I kepe McAfee active and updated
-I just did a Spybot cleaning

I have cleaned the disk several times. Upon closer examination of the disk, it becomes obvious to me that something isn't quite right. Although there is a series of small marks toward the center of the disk, they cast a shadow on the substraight. Infact, when I look at the disk from a very acute angle, I see no visible surface disruptions there. Furthermore, I have been able (on two separate computers) to copy all the files from the CD onto my computer except for Resource1.zip . I get a "Cannot copy Resource1ata Error (cyclic reduncancy check)."

Since this is also the file that the install hangs on, I beleive it is the problem. So my question is, what can I do about that? I do not belive that cleaning the disk again (or with those special devices I've seen) will really help, as the surface does not appear to be damaged.

Nevertheless, since one of my earlier cleaning attempts failed, and a number of these messages was generated, I'm going to see what some extreme cleaning will do.

It infact appears that some extreme cleaning was what it took! Although the marks didn't completely vanish, they appear to have been reduced enough!

The install went normally. Yay! A 2-year late Christmas present!

What did "some extreme cleaning" include? This may be helpful for other folks!

"Extreme cleaning" was a repeated number of spritzes with 'glass plus' and some serious elbow grease with a clean white t-shirt (specifically the spot right infront of my left kidney). Followed by the same with water. Apparently I had plastic buildup on the disk. (Possibly from the case?)

Note: A bad cleaning with a dirty cloth was a serious detriment and generated 4 times the number of errors before I finally fixed the issue.

    Welcome to the Forums!

Note that you've resurrected a topic from 2006, and Crimsonseraphim hasn't posted anything since then. So, it's extermely unlikely that you'll get an answer from him/her other than what you see above.

Have you tried disc cleaning and/or an Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up?
