I the campaign I would imagine you have to get to the point where it teaches you about it.

In skirmish/multiplayer you have to unlock the upgrade options in the Prestige menu.

Thanks for the reply - okay, I am only on the 3rd level in the campaign so maybe it hasn't come up yet.

It just seemed odd to me as instead of upgrading exisiting buildings, you have to build more of the same.

In multiplayer/skirmish does unlocking the upgrade function happen in one go, or do you have to unlock the upgrade function for each type of building individually? Thanks for your help! Raven

if I remember right it happens in one go but then you can only upgrade the residences and not the work building, if you want to increase production in the workers you need to give them better food than basic.

Hi just an update: Howl-UK thanks you were right. It does come up in the Campaign, just a few missions further in than I was. This is an option that you unlock in the Prestige menu :-) Raven
