Thread: American Education | Forums

I was watching Oprah and she was talking to Bill Gates about the lack of good education in American schools. They said that right now, America, the richest country in the world, ranks 24th in Math. They also showed two schools in the Chicago area that were less than 20 miles away. One of them was a state-of-the-art school while the other was a run-down piece of **** in a low-income neighborhood.

What do you think the goverment should do(Specifically) to improve American education?

Instal Military Law, and force people to not be stupid.

It's people's own fault for being lazy. If they tried, they'd be smarter. It's not the govt.'s fault.

Maybe, just MAYBE, throw a little Education into the mix, as opposed to 'teaching' useless **** for months on end.

*sighs* its an international problem too.
I'd say to put more money into education and use less in the expansion of the military.

They should stop spending 320 million per jet fighter and put the money where it is needed, schools. I couldn't believe when they did a survey of Americans only 58% knew where iraq was, with the others failing, some even saying Australia was Iraq!

Our British system works alot better, we don't have a points system, we have low medium and high classes. High being for the more academic. It works out because everyone leaves school at 16 unless staying on for futher education, you cannot fail a year and redo it. Once you take your GCSE's even if low marks you can still get a great job, but right now the pass rate is really high with alot of people getting A*'s like the highest mark available.

I think the stats said recently there is 2 million people in Britain that can't do math or basic english, not bad, could be alot worse.

True. If kids don't get educations it's becauset hey don't care! How many times do you hear of people saying, "I faked my way through highschool!"

Honestly... I was homeschooled up until college, so I'm not sure about how well public schools teach or not. I got a great education though. But then again... I actually tried. lol. My cousins go to public school though, and sometimes it's just pathetic. One of my cousins makes the honor roll every year, but it's really hard not to make the honor roll when they let you take your test over, and over, and over, and over until you get an A.

I was homeschooled from 6th grade until half of my Junior year. This last semester was my first smester in public school since fifth grade. I got as good an education as possible while I was homeschooled, and I'm surprised (and disappointed) at the intelligence of most of the students at the school. It's not everybody, because there are some REALLY smart people there. But most are dumb as sand. And it's really pathetic.

well a few things would help

let the govt sink enough money into schools to keep them current with technology, pay teachers enough so that they will actually care about their jobs, and hold them accountable via pay cuts for failing students, also make it illegal to drop out of highschool.

also make the penalty for dropping out of school applicable to the parents as well as the student.
