To your first question.....Hyperlobby, downloaded from the link Tully provided, is quite safe. You can install with no hesitation. Read the intructions for the program at the hyperfighter site to understand how to use.

There is an entire universe of stuff out there for you to explore. I wouldn't worry about viruses. The IL-2 community is too engrossed with this incredible sim and all it's complexities to waste time screwing up your computer. Yes there are many Mods to download to get extra planes and maps and all kinds of cool stuff. That was why I said tp patch to 4.10.1 and check back. What version are you patched to? When you get to 4.10.1 make a new folder in you "C:\Games" folder (or wherever your IL2 is and call it "Copy of IL-2 Stumovick 1946" then COPY, don't drag, the entire contents of the IL2 folder into the copy folder. This is the folder for mods.
But I'm probably getting the cart before the horse. You should go ahead and join an online squadron before bothering to mod your game. Tully and the other guys cvan advise you better on that as so far I'm still strictly an offline player. So Patch to 4.10.1, make a copy, then patch your stock game to 4.11 and then 4.11.1. And it doesn't end there but, enough for now. F.

There is a slight problem. I got the patches installed before you posted and said to make a copy. I was following MAXAMHZ's step by step post. Am I still able to mod if I didn't copy the folder?
As for the online part, I registered with Hyperloby, I am just waiting for it be accepted or something. lol

I am running Patch number 7, 4.11.1m from M4T.

No Problem. You can still make a copy. 2 actually, if you have the HD space. Name one "Copy of IL2" and the other "2nd copy of I'L2" You will have to get one of these copies back to 4.10.1. What you can try, that I have done succesfully before, is to rerun the 4.10 installer over one of the 4.11.1 copies. After you run the 4.10 installer, start the sim and see what it says. If is says 4.10, then run the 4.10.1 as well and leave that copy where it is. This would be for UP3RC4, Dark Blue World, etc.. Some may refute what I say here but it has worked for me in the past. The 2nd copy at 4.11.1 is good as it is and can put HSFX6 on top of it. But always keep a clean Unmodded copy of the game in case things get screwed up.

As far as which mod, I have been playing with this sim for 2 plus years and I understand it like this. If you want the most realistic flying experience, with accurate flight models and realistic engine performance, complex engine management, etc. then you use HSFX6. If you want visuals and effects and maps, it's UP3RC4. But I'll let the other guys comment on that as they have been around allot longer and are much better pilots and fly online unlike myself. I really just play around with this thing on easy settings, but it's a fantastic game no matter how you use it.

But before you go crazy I think guys like Tully and Max and others and even me would suggest you fly the sim for a while before you bother modding. There's so much to learn in the stock sim especially if you're going to fly online at full difficulty and actually dog fight and fly missions with other people, getting into installing mods can take time away from flying and learning the basics. But you'll have to decide these thing for yourself. Good Luck.

There are two "mega" mod packs. HSFX6 needs to be installed over 4.11.1 and UP3RC4 needs to be installed over 4.10.1
Currently most online servers at Hyperlobby that allow mods use HSFX6 so I'd suggest you only need to make one copy of your install at this stage. If you find later that you aren't satisfied with the number of AC you can fly in that one and/or stock 4.11.1, you can go to the additional trouble of making another copy and reverting the version to 4.10.1 for UP3RC4 installation.

We don't allow links to IL2 mods from here because the developers haven't sanctioned mod pack, but google will help.

Once installed you run it to join games from the "Forgotten Battles" room in hyperlobby client).

You can trust it. No malware involved.

There are just a few heavies you can fly in the official game. All others like the B29 are mods. (not official).

I would first enjoy the official game for months before touching mods. They can disrupt gameplay and can be very complicated to get working. They also cut you off from the official update path (new official patches will not work).

I don't use mods myself. I will wait until the good mods get incorporated into the game officially.

You will be busy for months with all the official game offers anyway.

You could patch up to 4.10.1m, then copy c:/Games/IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/ to another location like c:/Mods/ and apply mods or modpacks there.
That way you keep your official upgrade path in c:/Games and can play a modded game from c:/mods/

You are right about the mods. I will wait for the good ones to be in on the upcoming patches. Thank you for the advise!! I greatly appreciate it!!! I was looking around and found how to change the screen size to full screen. I just cant do it for some reason. I change the conf file and try to save, but can't. (I didn't try the screen size. Just small stuff I have read about. Like water graphics. haha) Either way, I can't change change anything. Also, do you know what numbers to put in for the width?

How long does that usually take? I got that on 6/2 and I am not able to sing in because it says my password doesn't match my code name. I used what was sent to me in the email from HyperLobby.

That seems like the http://hyperfighter.sk/ site/forum registration, not the lobby registration. To register for the lobby, start the application and click connect. Type in the name you want to use and your choice of password. If the name is already in use you'll get a message saying wrong password. If not, you'll be asked to confirm the password and enter an email address in the chat window bottom center. Unless something's changed in the last version or two, that'll get you logged in.
