Scott672.....yes you are right, Twidgets. however i've also heard mechanics call EM's and ET's the wire biters. But Twidget is more like it. And I like torp ranges,you can die without dying. and usually it's the sonarmen that are responsible for that. However the one thing that is more scary than "torpedo in the water!" would be ORSE. Unfortunately only you and I would get that without explaination but I'm not sure i'd want to subject anyone else to that horror.
About the practice torpedos. When we were down in Australia playing with the Aussie's, we fired actual torpedo without warheads. Now we were testing a new type of torpedo for them, but in that exercise we did fire real torpedos. The large scale wargames, i.e. RimPac07, no actual torpedos are fired.
WWII story: My uncle was aboard a frigate in 87-90. During a port call in the Philippines he and some shipmates went to the beeches to look at the WWII tanks and bombed out shelters of the war and to collect any souvenirs they could find. Well one of the guys starts picking up cylinders. But the sand is so caked onto it, he finds a nearby tank(blown up)to use to knock off the sand. As my uncle came over to look at the find, it soon became apparent to my uncle that what was being banged up againt this tank by his friend was an unused mortar round and his friend had no idea what it was. As you can imagine my uncle Dave didn't bring it home with him, but he did collect several large calibar rounds(spent of course) and a few other trinkets.

I did not mess with the rules, I corrected them to show the proper order of things.

Furthermore, spec ops units do not wear steel pots (which is about as useful as tits on a boar hog) we wore boonie hats or berets.

Deepblue, please remember, no AIRFORCE ever secured and occupied anything, the ground pounders did the grunt work, while you boys fly around above it all and try to LOOK like you are doing something.

For that matter, no navy ever overran, secured and occupied anything either, the amphibious ground pounders did that as well.

It is also true that ground pounders have a longer history than you zoomies, along with, though I hate to admit it, the navy. Our branches have been around as long as civilization, while you airheads, uh, zoomies, have about 90 some odd years of history.

While I will admit that zoomies have there uses, like drawing ground fire so we ground pounders can get a good fix on where the bad guys are, and yes, I will admit you boys are adequate at delivering heavy ordinance on a target...

But, after you guys drop your bombs, you go back to your airfields guarded by GROUNDPOUNDERS who keep you safe so you can sleep at night, (we know better than to give you guys a rifle, you might end up forgetting which end the bullet comes out) so once more we do the work you so-called 'gentlemen' have no clue how to do.

So, the new rules will apply, you WILL greet all ground pounders with respect and kiss the ground we walk on, for without us, you wouldnt be standing on it.

Well I believe we're classified as spec ops types now, but back in Nam us PJ's were just really well trained CSAR guys. Any how, due to a total lack of interest, here's the answers to the trivia quiz......

The up side was, we almost never had to pay for a round when we were down town (nice to be appreciated).

Lots of laughs, lots of chest thumping, lots of memories. Vietvet and Jlf you got a whole lot to be proud of and the bar is open on me. That goes for the rest of you guys too.

There is one truth here that stands above all else......doesn't matter if you used a typewriter, tank, sub, sniper rifle, M16, coast guard cutter, carrier, F-4, or potato peeler, every single Richard here would leave space for the other guy in their foxhole, and cover your butt til you got there.

For those of you who keep insisting that the Airforce guys need to be where they are needed, when they are needed.....that would be at the bar, paying the tab at time or OUR departure. The only time the Airforce is on time and on location is if you need to airlift a crate or beer to a destination somewhere not around the Marines, and someone other than the Airforce is paying for it.
AND to you ground-pounders please think about this.....if it wasn't for the Airforce transports or the Navy's landing craft and ships, you'd be stuck pounding the ground around your States-side waterhole. Who's shells and suppersive fire bomb the shore to allow for beech landings? Who's bombs and Recon clear the area around your target? Yes it's the ground pounders that secure and occupy, but if USS So-in-So's tomahawk doesn't leave a building left standing, or the Ohio's ICBM doesn't leave a country behind,in it's wake, then there is nothing to secure and no place to land, respectivly.

Just saying that support roles may seem insignificant, but who's got the bigger guns?? There's no substitute for 'Calibre'.

Also when it comes to drinking beer, well as a sailor i now know the reason for pay-raises in the military. it's to afford the increase in beer comsumption. Increase in Rank=increase in alcohol comsumption. Compared to us, you other branches are like the 16yr old, wine-cooler sipping kiddies.

Absolutely Lane, I will say with great pleasure that if any of you needed some room in a foxhole, mine would also be open to you guys. However as a submainer, if i'm digging a foxhole, then i'm a little more then "TEST DEPTH" and am no longer sure if you'd want my foxhole. Happy drinking, and next round's on me.

As the "Company Clerk" I had a little incident that really irked me. We had a SP5 coming into our company and it was my job to do the processing of his paperwork. This guy walked in and I noticed he was wearing the Vietnam Service Ribbon. This was at Fort Riley and since it's the home of the "Big Red One" lots of guys on the fort had that ribbon, anyway I asked him when he'd been there and he said he'd just come from there. Looking through his 201 file I noticed that there weren't any orders for him to be in Vietnam. So, I looked through all the papers again and noticed that his last fort was Fort Sam Houston, TX. So I asked the guy again and he stuttered something about orders being changed and all this other rot. It turned out that he had NOT been in Vietnam, he had never had orders to go to Vietnam. I went to the CO, they called the guy in and he came out about 20 minutes later w/o the ribbon. I guess he thought that no one would notice or check.

Now let me guess; .......It was right after that encounter that "The Company Clerk" mis-typed the guy's orders: .....sending him to Fort Wainwright for two years.
