Thread: Splinter Cell series is taking a very BAD turn | Forums

    This note is for Ubisoft Marketing.

    What made the past series great was (1) single player STEALTH of one-on-one (2) exemplary character of Sam (3) solid bond between Lambert & Grim (4) trustworthiness (5) new places; mostly in foreign lands.

    These fine attributes was solidly portrayed in the previous 4 SC games. What the heck happened in Conviction? It turned out to be a dime-a-dozen war game where you must (at times) shoot a dozen bad guys in America. Did your story writer get shot?

    The Tomb Raider series went to hell for the same reasons after TR4 – where the smart & intelligent archeologist Lara solved interesting puzzles with some occasional bad guy work -- then they royally screwed the series making her out to be a WARIOR with sniper rifle and rocket launcher running around the CITY.

    Since WHEN is Sam encumbered that he can’t pass thru a hedge or bush as he did in previous games? He could jump and climb on just about anything before. Oh, in Conviction Sam can walk around on the ceiling (of HQ) without making a noise? Interesting that for a organization that is so secret, the CIA doesn’t know about it – that it is comprised of a HUGE building with hundreds of employees. Interesting that ALL those employees have instantly turned BAD because of one man?

    Your story writer(s) must have sawdust for brains. You are killing the series. I will be more discriminating when thinking about purchasing the next Splinter Cell game – if there is a next one.

    You know, I'm afraid I agree with you. But I think things started going downhill with Double Agent.

    As for Conviction, they've turned it into just a rail shooter to entertain simple minds with twitchy trigger fingers. There's almost no stealth at all, just mass killing to get the job done, because there is no way to get around it in most levels. The previous games challenged my mind to find different ways to AVOID killing the bad guys. I even made it a challenge to try to get through the whole thing without touching anyone if it was not needed to complete the level and it could be done on most levels. And there were myriad ways to climb all over the place to escape detection, not just one narrow hemmed in corridor that you have to shoot your way through.

    It kind of dumbs down Sam's character that he has to shoot his way through everything to get the job done. He's supposed to be a stealthy and smart man of the shadows, not a serial run and gun assassin. This is where I think Double Agent began the fall, by adding to the plot the story of the death of his daughter, then starting down the road of prison and revenge. And I didn't like Sam having to kill Lambert's character either. I haven't finished Conviction yet, so I don't know where Grimsdottir's character is heading, but it looks bad. If the "writers" had just stuck to the tried and true formula that was very polished with Chaos Theory (without Starforce mind you), I would have continued the series without gripe.

    But now, Sam's stealthy character has morphed into a simple assassin riding on train rails with a machine gun. If this is all Ubisoft can up chuck to Sam's loyal followers, we're in for junk well into the future.

    TUNNELCAT: you're my kind of stealthy guy! What made SC unique was STEALTH. Like you, back in 2007, I challenged folks on this forum to try playing SC-1 all the way thru without killing anyone -- except the bad guy at the end to finish the game. That required real HARD thinking but was doable!

    Instead of tip-toeing across that tin roof, I wound up RUNNING across it, disabling the transmitter, then ran like hell to get behind the door so when the thugs came out blazing, I was behind, then sneaked around and closed the door. That is stealth; not the zit-nosed kid that shoots everything that moves.

    UBISOFT could have spent one (maybe two) levels where Sam regained his composure, then joined a fantastic group of support folks to do some tough missions - with the “YES! WE DID IT!” psychology of success – not the “I don’t wanna play anymore” attitude. UBISOFT really screwed this one up royally, including Sam. To say any more might be spoilers.

    Let’s hope Ubisoft marketing & moderators are doing their job to take note and pass along our (customer) feedback – since we can spend our money on many other fine games out there. If they won’t deliver, then a competitor will, for sure!

    Finally a note to the game AUTHORS: guys, you really DON”T have to spend all your time and effort to “improve” the game (ignore the game magazine critics). Eliminate stupid things like that SODUKU puzzle (most of us are NOT math nerds). Just give us another great story and adventure! We will patronize!

    The only reason Ubisoft did this(with conviction) was to appeal to the reviews and to first person shooters/gamers that plow through a game in 2 days. So in the end, conviction was just like any other game. good fora week and it was on to the next gammes. If you look now, the people who have played conviction, dont anymore. While if they created a good game at least hardcore SC would still be playing them. While those *** game critics dont like SC for what it was, so they said that is has to be more fun. F-that. If they dont like normal SC, then they shouldn't play it. Ubisioft shouldn't make SC into something it isn't just because some turds said it should be more like a shooter. To those people, it doesn't make a difference or not whether SC becomes a shooter. Another game will come out and will be just as good of a shooter if not better. Why waste a perfectly good legacy just so that it apeals to an audience that will play the game (not because they loved the old games) but because they see an advertisement, with a guy holding a gun.

    It seems like they spent all their time on Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood.

    That and I think it was just badly executed. The multiplayer was a big flop...even though I still play it ;P It's not so bad that I don't want to play it any more, but it's a game I play 'every once in a while', or when I want to shoot some people who don't deserve to live in real life, and enact it in the Deniable Ops game.

    And since I've followed the game since the second game, I can't let go of it because I don't want to feel like the legacy and story died, so I keep playing.

    I feel the same way....clearly the first three games are the best but I don't wanna give up playing SC despite this drastic downgrade in quality.

    I agree. Stealth gave you a challenge... Any average simpleton can shoot someone... It takes skill and patience to be stealthy. Honestly, Double Agent ruined the series. Its when he strayed away from his skills, and became the person that he was told NOT to be in the first 3.

    I haven't played Splinter Cell since the first one. What the **** just happened? I wanted a decent game where I could use stealth and a good story to go with it. I picked up Assassin's Creed and as soon as I seen that he was someone else from some old period, I dropped it completely.

    The game is enjoyable but it's not stealth-action. It's to target brain dead impatient kids who can't drag bodies into the shadows. A.I. is always in the same spot, which is really pathetic. Sigh... I reckon SC is going to die soon if they don't go back to the core.
