Thread: Programming mouse - Wheel to Zoom Out? | Forums

  1. #1
As I don't know what the Y axis mouse invert thing is, and it could be related, I apologize in advance if ny question is related.
( Oh BTW: Don't let your Myst V sit next to you in a box for several days then decide to install it until 2 am some morning... Haha. Stayed up till 7 am this morning! What joy!!!! What joy!!! Most time was spent cleaning computer, installing, reading, homework,
configuring Nvidia, game controls and gawking at the beauty of the game.)
Okay, done. I had to give flattery where it was due.
I was able to program my MS typical optical mouse to click on wheel and use Zoom Out for going backwards but somehow lost this setting messing around with mouse and controls!
    1. I have the MS mouse program installed and I tried to be "program specific" as that's an option. I didn't know which file in the game with which to associate these settings with.
    2. I tried all sorts of in game and out of game using alt/tab to try to arrange it so that left click is slower/walk, use wheel click on wheel to Zoom Out /move backwards, and right click is run or a combo of right/left is run.
Any clever hints? Yes, I've tried unmapping and hitting my mouse. Yes, mouse driver is enabled.
When mouse driver isn't enabled, there is no movement.
I am so tired after a few hours sleep, a little help would be appreciated and would probably help others wanting total mouse control vs WSAD/and other options.
This game begs to be played to the point of fatigue, thus, tired players want ease of use, if possible. ( Myst V fatigue is also my excuse for not researching this Y axis discussion and any illogic posted by me.)
I thank you in advance for time spent on this!
I am thankful for Myst V!!

If your scroll wheel acts as a button by pressing on it, the game should move you backwards if you press it in Classic mode (press and hold for Free move). I'm not entirely sure, as I played almost exclusively in Classic, but the "back up" option may not work in Classic Plus. If you're in Classic Plus, try going to Classic and pressing it then.

here's my description from another thread about what inverting the Y-axis is/does and why i want it as a feature:

inverting the Y-axis of the mouse; so that when you push the mouse forward (up) the screen pans downward, as though you were looking down. if you have ever played an FPS game (doom, quake, etc.) they all have this option, and most people use it. it is unnatural for the first few minutes that you try it, but if you stick it out for a bit, you'll never go back. i know that at first i was very skeptical of this configuration, but now i love it.

it adds a lot to the immersiveness of a game. the reason being that, if you imagine youself within the 3D environment of the game world, you would lean forward to look down and lean backward to look up. inverting the Y-axis of the mouse gives you that feeling. it's like "okay, i'm pushing my avatar forward, so he would be looking down now." you have to think of it as moving "yourself" not moving the screen. it really helps put you into the game world.

for my tastes, there is no easier, better, or more immersive way to play a 3D game than with WASD, and mouselook with an inverted Y-axis. especially since the "1" "2" and "3" keys change the control scheme, and they are just a short stretch from the WASD keys.

::sigh:: i feel like i'm the only one in here who actually wants this feature, though...

Alahmnat! Good idea! I'm sure I was in Classic Plus when I did get the wheel click to Zoom Out, but I will try your theory! Thanks!
No! I totally agree, Myster3! Sounds awesome!
To support you, the ease of mouse and keyboard really matter as is noted by MS's own
Mouse Healthy Computing Guide which gives warnings in order to avoid injury and strain for the user.
This "Guide" is provided with the MS mouse program which shows and demonstrates via photos and explanations the postures, positions, habits one should use while on the computer. Yeh, like taking breaks and eating...Yeh, sure during Myst V, we are going to follow this guide? (LOL). Still it does, theoretically, support the Y axis concept and my desires for programming the mouse for improved ease of play.
(Still, we do want the Program Specific section to work. I guess I'll have to go to MS and make sure I have all the mouse program updates?? LOL! Why must we repeatedly have to update even the tiniest of MS products and programs? Some of us would actually like one of their programs to work w/o an update.)
Apparently, no one else is out there seeking better mouse behavior in order to play Myst V at its best? I can't believe that. I think more will post with solutions for us. Let's hope....
I have the Basic Optical Mouse Intellipoint program downloaded from MS. It should be programmable and also, program specific, for what I want as no one has figured out the Y axis concept for Myst V yet.
Either would make this game easier, enhanced, but the Y axis would allow for better game immersion, I agree!
I've also been thinking of getting a new laser mouse with its new features. Might be easier to get around and less tiresome on the hand.
Mouse comments and such would be appreciated.
Any master "mouser," please share? Tx!

logitech makes *exceptional* mice... mouses.. meese, whatever.

they are ergonomically designed (if you're right-handed), last for years and years, and look cool. take a look at the MX-518:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104178

i've been using logitech for years. my favorite thing about them is that they allow your hand/wrist to sit naturally (wrist pivotted towards the right) unlike "normal" mice which force you to unnaturally hold your wrist parallel to the surface that the mouse sits on. head down to your local Best Buy and try one out.

as for a "laser" (i assume you mean optical?) mouse - you will find that it works better than an old-fashioned "roller ball" mouse. the optical mice never get "gummed up". if you can afford $40, i'd get the MX-518!

    Hi Myster!
I am very confused by what is laser and what is optical. No matter. What works best for playing MV is priority for me right now. So if buying a better mouse is needed, I'm buying one! But I'd love comments on the programming of various mice to see if anyone has been able to make their mouse zoom out in MV?

Serious delays and control issues come up when I try to move levers and such in MV. I am wondering if a better mouse would really help?
I'd love comments from others, too.
Also, could this one be programmed better for backing up/zooming out than the cheapies.
I have two Logitech mouse, mice.
    One is optical and wired.
And, when I was a novice, I bought a wireless, optical. That Logitech mouse is rather heavy and so is bothersome. I just can't use it due to its weight.
Still, I wonder if I bought a newer model, could I succeed in correctly programming it to zoom out? It would be very nice if others would comment and share!
I might as well use MV as a great excuse to upgrade my mouse. I think I will try my old wired Logitech, download their mouse program in order to see if I can zoom out and such.
Look at this and see what you think? (What a long link! I don't know how to hide links nor shorten them. Playing MV is tough enough and learning the best forum protocol has always been an issue for me. I apologize to the mod if I do post incorrectly!)

    So my goals:
    1. a great mouse or
    2. how to program my cheapie MS mouse in order to zoom out using the mouse.
I keep trying all sorts of options using this MS mouse program and MV's options and can't get the MS mouse to behave consistently.

laser mice are the next generation of optical mice. the laser allows for better tracking on all types of surfaces. it replaces the LED that is used in most optical mice.

no. a mouse will never give any peformance benefits in regards to that sort of thing.

Myst V has no "zoom out" feature, so i'll assume you mean "move backwards". but, i'm a bit confused... in your original post you said you had set up your current mouse to move backwards. what exactly is it you are looking for in a new mouse??

any programmable mouse should allow you to set the clickable mouse wheel to do whatever you want it to.

that is a very good and very expensive mouse. it is cordless, which i don't like - but that is a matter of taste. i think that cordless mice have a tiny bit of lag, that a corded mouse doesn't have. however, if you say you have disliked cordless mice in the past (because they are heavier) you might want to try this out before you buy it. $80 is a lot to spend on a mouse, especially if you end up not liking it!

    I solved it!
Auto scroll works for zooming out!
I'll check other mouse settings, come back and edit if another setting allows one to zoom out.
I am not feeling great today, but wanted to share this. Will research more mouse options later when feeling better.
Nope, I did not party last night! Haha!
