If you are going to run, Ball Buster Games like Far Cry2... on LCD's runing at 1280x1024 Native Resolution... Then think $500.00 Cards...
This is all Blazing Angles Needs...
GeForce 6800GS
You didn't say what Slot... AGP or PCIe
If you run at 1024x768 this is as Low as you should Go... It out performs a 6800GT...!!!
Its the New Micro Chips that run cooler and comes OC'ed right from the factory... And you could push it higher...
6800GS WOW Pricing:

I'm trying to figure out if I should buy an alienware laptop with a go 6800 ultra or a go 7800gtx. both are pci express and have 256megs I think. the monitor is a 17" with a native rez of 1920 x 1200. the 7800 is $387 more

I have a 6800gt and can max out the settings and detail. Plays perfect. Only thing I cannot do is bump up the anit-aliasing to over 2x.
If your like me and price concious I wouldnt be willing to spend almost $400 for a relatively small bump in performace.
Others might disagree with me but I would value my $400 more than an extra 10-15 fps.
Remember for a game to play smoothly a system only needs to run a game of 30fps. Anything higher dosnt matter you cant tell the difference unless you turn on an fps counter.

I have a ATI x1800XL 512mb and can max out the settings and detail anit-aliasing to 6x. Did I forget to mention that I run it on Intel 940d 3.2 GHz and 2 GB RAM XP pro 64
