Thread: Help with dual core upgrade 939 | Forums

  1. #1
    Hello m8s

I am about to upgrade from an AMD 3700+ to a 4400 X2. I would like to know whether you have been able to do this without reinstalling windows.
(I fear that I might run into trouble with boontybox doing so as I cant remember how I eventually managed to get this working...)

    Im grateful for any advice.

Oh btw, my ATI X1950 Pro AGP is on its way. Another nvidia customer crosses the line! I will certainly post and let you know how it feels, as this will be my first ATI.

Have a nice day and thanks for input.

No, you will not have to reinstall windows. Just make sure you get AMD's dualcore driver and dualcore optimizer.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I managed to get the CPU working OK:

    TESTING
The 4400+ was at a 10% clock disadvantage versus my previous 3700+ single core (it doesnt seem to like overclocking at all).

Although both CPUs were correctly detected and working, the total load never exceeds 56%.

on The Black Death, Average and MIN FPS are identical to the 3700+ but Max FPS is higher and it just seems smoother (no hiccups at all, whereas single core would occasioanlly struggle for a split second). I think the bottleneck is now the 6800GT. The X1950 Pro is coming next week, so we will see

Thank you for your help and S!

Rgr, thats right in line with the main advantages to dual-core. With all the extras we run for this sim, teamspeak, hyperlobby, TrackIR, etc., the second core can really come in handy. No longer will additional cpu loads take away from the running of the sim itself.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hmm, Im seeing something rather interesting and not OK:

Both cores are working, and their workload changes a lot over time. However, for some reason, the TOTAL cpu that the game uses is never more than 56%. If one core is at 80, the other will be at 20.

This does not seem to be due to another bottleneck, bur rather to a weird behaviour of IL2.

For example, upon loading the game itself, both CPUs shoot to 100%.
But upon loading a TRACK or mission or whatever other CPU intensive task, both CPUs work, but the total is around 50% as if the game believed it has only half the power at hand. And in the Black Death, you can see frame rates drop in the CPU- bound parts, while CPU usage remains stubbornly at 50%

Any thoughts? Are other m8s seeing this too or are u seeing higher CPU usage over both cores?

This is the difference between a single threaded app (IL2) and a multi threaded app. IL2 only makes use on one cpu, windows spreads that load around but it will still only use one cpu worth. There's a setting in conf.ini that you can set which core IL2 will use, if you set it to one core then that one would shoot to 100% and stay there (more or less). ProcessAffinityMask=1 is the line in the [rts] section, I'm don't recall which number does what but there =0, =1, and =2. I believe by default it has a semicolon in front of it, remove the semicolon to activate it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

    I'd completely reinstall.

I swapped out a 3500 to a 4600X2 on an XP32 bit install and it ran worse. I reinstalled both 32 and 64 bit and the improvements were dramatic.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Me too Mondo. But this is coming from someone whose middle name has been changed to "reformat" by his m8s. I got the deed down to getting it done pretty darn quick and working on getting it quicker:

Now that would be cool, eh? Put one DVD in, walk away and come back to a clean install of not only Windows, but all the critical & software updates, as well as all of your programing. This link was found and shared with me courtesy of Mr. Bbloke. Wonder why? HEHE Thanks Chris!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
