additional info for above posting. I'm running XP home ed.

If you have more recent drivers then the game should just crash out to windows with a VPU Recover message. I think this is true from round about driver version 3.9 but 4.2 is the latest now.
I had the same kind of problem you are experiencing. See my second post in this thread: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=t...91&m=765101642 with the settings i found to be the highest i could set on my Radeon without crashing.
You will need to turn off forced AA in the Direct3D options if you have it on. You can still use the in-game AA though which is ok.
