Obviously you are new to the entire M&M franchise. The spell selection is ENTIRELY random except where the map designer designates what spells are available in a specific town's mage guild.

I know it can be frustrating not getting the specific spell you want/need, but with the bonus perks, even if you DON'T have Haste, you still want Master of Wrath

Actually I have played HOMM 3(a little)& 4 but 5 is the first time I put any real effort into the series. I understand that is the way it has always been done I just think it would be interesting to try it the way I suggested. Seems like it would bring a more controled element into the game playing that would appeal to me. Plus it would force people to choose more carefully what they wish to concentrate on instead of getting lucky. D

You simply have to build the mage-guild levels in question before you pick the ability.

Also I had a thought which I feel would add to the quality of the game, I think it would be better, in terms of spells, that the only people who could learn light magic, dark, etc. were heroes that had that skill and then they could only learn the higher spells if they are expert or advanced. This random element seems to add an unwanted element of luck that I dislike. I enjoy being able to plan things ahead and it is a pain to get Master of Wrath only to find that haste is unavailable at your town. I think it would be better to have all spells available to the hero as long as he has the proper skill, and skill level, and has built up his town accordingly. I don't know how others feel about this so I thought I would bring it up for discussion. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Ok from ur post i can see ure big "haste" fan but here are some points:
-haste is not always the best choice: for ex when enemy has dark magic:slow(if ure silvan with resistance, unicorns, and item with resistance ure pretty saved thowgh)
-also 4 out of 6 tipes of heroes have power of speed so if u need/like haste take "power of speed" all u need is attack....(see skill wheel)
-also u can try heaven hevo-windrider(not know here name)thats a good spec. in case u will use haste and also has other advantages that will require luck but it depends of what u want
