Thread: The purpose of forums | Forums

  1. #1
There will always be complaints about games on game forums, particularly forums for long and eagerly awaited games. It is human nature: finally the CD is in the drive and it won't work AAARRGGHHH!

Some people will use the game's forum to vent their frustration rather than taking it out on their families.

It is part of a forums purpose, and I really don't think it should be discouraged.

It's not being discouraged. Quite the opposite if you read what the mods post, time and again. The longest real thread on this board so far is about compaints and problems with the game.

What is being discouraged is insulting other forum users, spamming and other forms of abuse as set out in the forum posting guidelines. If you can't follow a simple set of rules that simply asks you to respect the other users and no break tha law, then you don't deserve to stay.

I for one do not discourage venting and ranting ... for I have used the forums for such things as well ... but I do so in a way that does not offend anyone ... I know that the majority of us can say what we need to say and do so in an intelligent way.

Please say your piece and vent all you want ... all any of us have asked is that you do so in a respective way ... if their is something wrong with the game of these forums ... then say so ... and not use things like "these forums suck" and "you all suck" ... this does not tell us what is wrong and all this does is get everyone upset.

Each thread I see with a complaint has following comments somewhere about the complaint has already been seen, or dealt with, or why do people have to put this stuff on this forum...

To me that is discouraging complaints. Stirring up already annoyed people with accusations of dishonesty don't exactly help either.

It's expected on a forum like this with thousands of users that you do a little reading before posting a new thread. If there's an existing thread that addresses your concerns, post in it. That's the only way to keep the thread count under control. Otherwise we wouldn't have a hope of seeing the same topic twice before it left the first screen.

It's also something you do in order to be respectful of the other users. Having legitimate conversations buried under dozens of identical complaints makes it difficult to use the boards at all. Starting a new thread without first looking at what threads exist implies that you don't respect other users or their use of the boards, which is as good as insulting them.

For example, I lurked for a whole week here before I posted anything, even though I had been posting on the beta board.

I just looked at the thread titles on the front page, and there is perhaps three threads currently unlocked that deal with complaints.
I hardly think that is flooding the boards.
(Sorry this got vague, had to solve a pre-schooler's crisis in the middle and lost my train of thought )

It wasn't just the titles that caused those topics to be locked, but the content.

So should we create a whiny section?

Randomos thought having something like "the sandbox" where cats can go to bury... well, you get the idea.

Anyway, want us to create this? Is there a burning need?
