i made it just past where it says i am rewarded with slowing time....i dropped down all the rocks and it gives me the tutorial on how to slow time....pull left button...but every time i do that, i use up my "reverse" energy and then when it's all up i STILL don't have the ability to slow down time and roll under the closing door...can someone please advise/help? thanks

You mustn't press and hold to slow time. You have to tap the key.

Learn to understand the various graphical representations on the screen.
There is a long white line indicator in the center of the sand tank indicators.

When you hold the rewind key for one second, the white bar decreases a little and you rewind time just a little.
When you hold the rewind key for three seconds, the white bar decreases much more as you rewind time quite a bit.
Both of the above examples only consume one sand tank.
If you do nothing for about ten seconds, watch the center white line grow in length back to its maximum size.

If you hold the rewind key for 30 seconds, you will
-- empty one sand tank
-- empty a second sand tank immediately
-- empty a third sand tank after that
I consider that "panic mode".

Learn to glance attention to the various indicators in the game occasionally as you concentrate on fighting and maneuvering.
