Thread: Can I skip exile? Where does Uru fit in? | Forums

  1. #1
I played Myst abou 10 years ago and then got Riven but didn't get too far into it. I have received as gifts this year the Complete Uru Chronicles and Myst IV: Revelation. I was looking on the website for some information on these games and I realized there is another one: Myst III: Exile that I totally missed. I'm probably going to install Riven and play that since I never finished it before I start the others that I have. Should I buy Exile and play that as well? Will I miss something if I skip it? Is it worth even worrying about Riven at this point? Actually, I don't even know if my Riven disk will work on Windows XP - I think I had Win95 when I got it.

The sequence of Myst games is (I believe) this: MYST, Riven, Exile, Revelation. URU takes place quite a few years (decades or centuries, perhaps) after the Myst series (MYST, Riven, Exile, Revelation). I'm sure someone here can give you a better estimate of the time elapsed.

In other words, you can play URU without worrying about it spoiling anything from the rest of the games.

I don't think there's anything essential to Myst IV that was presented in Exile. But if you want the full storyline, you would probably want to play them in order.

Now, about Riven. It should work just fine on your computer. If not, try running it in compatability mode. To do this, (after installing) right click the Riven icon, select "Properties..." from the menu, click the "Compatability" tab, and check the "Run this program in compatability mode for:" box.

Set the Compatability to Win95. (Right-click on the games' icon & choose Properties. Click the Compatability tab. Check Win95.)

Definitely play Exile. You might even have it as a 3rd DVD in your Revelation DVD package.
If you want to be picky, finish Riven then play Exile, then play Revelation.

You have Uru CC & you're not sure if you should play it? Aren't you the least bit curious?
One problem, the Live aspect of Uru is no longer available. However, there is Until Uru (UU) which is a limited live version. First try Uru & then ask anyone here about getting onto the live shards.

GhostWay, Thanks for the tip on compatibility. Also thanks for filling me in on where Uru fits in. I hadn't even realized that Exile and Revelation had been developed!

Coronagold - Oh, no - I'm definitely going to play Uru. I just wasn't sure if it went in order with Riven, Exile and Revelation.

Now that you guys have given me these tips on getting Riven to run, I think I'm going to install it and play that first. Of course it will probably take me quite a while as I don't have a lot of free time on my hands. I'll be back to visit these boards for some hints for sure!

You probably will already, but you should play all of the games (Riven, Exile, Revelation) as they will make your experience more enjoyable. Uru is totally different, I think, though I've never played it (is it even Mac compatible?). There are other games in the Myst series, I've heard, but never played, such as pots, or whatever it is.

URU is completely different correct, in the style of play. No, sadly, the Havok physics engine that is used to move objects in URU isn't ported to Mac's and Cyan got the official word back in November. Very sad news indeed. They used that engine apparently with the assurances that yes, it would be ported to Mac's at a later date. See the notice Cyan Worlds Inc.

PotS refers to Path of the Shell. It is the second expansion pack of URU available. If you have the Complete Chronicles, you have URU, To D'ni, and Path of the Shell already. So, what are you waiting for? I laugh at the thought of having Riven and never having played it!?!?!?! That's like "heresy" around these parts Good luck and enjoy what many consider the best Myst title out there: RIVEN
And have a look at my friend's excellent, in-depth Myst site EMS Relto for more information on all things Myst

If you're feeling REALLY brave, try to pick up realMyst on the internet. It's expensive now. It's a 3D environment of the 1st Myst game. It's retro chic, that's what drove the price back up. But it's amazing. And you won't see anything like that until you check out Uru.

You'll have fun in Uru. Just figure out the desert Cleft area & they'll throw 5 Ages at you. Freebies! You'll be shocked at how much is given to you.

But prepare to cringe in Edar Kira/Gemo.

As for realMyst...Never really liked it.

I like Myst 5. I like Uru. I like Realtime 3D *and* Prerendered graphics. I like game history more than I like RAWA history, and while I think Myst 3/4/5 were great games, I think it would have been best to end on Ri
