Spent a lot of time tonight on tech calls... one guy told me that its a waste to go with 4 GB of RAM if you are using a 32 bit OS like XP or Vista. I am puzzled, if this is correct... Does the swap file count toward this limit ? I'm curious because I'm going to be putting in 4 GB RAM tomorrow and was going to set the page file to G: (totally unused 30gb partition), and set it at app. 8000 MB...

    Thanks...

Vista can read more then 3.2 GB.
XP has the limit of 3.2 GB.

Yeah, the 3.2 GB thing is true for XP, but the simms or whatever they're calling them now don't come in 0.8GB or 1.6 GB to add up to 3.2. So I got 4 GB and take advantage of the full 3.2 . Memory just isn't that expensive anymore.

The person who told you 4GB with a 32bit OS is a waste is kind of correct. A 32bit operating system can only "see" 4GB of memory. From that it subtracts subtracts memory addresses reserved for hardware. On the average computer 32bit Windows will show between 3 and 3.5GB of RAM when you install 4GB. 4GB is not really a waste when you can buy a 2x2GB kit for the same or less than a 2x1GB and a 2x512MB. This applies to Both XP and Vista.
