Thread: "Black Shark" anyone? | Forums

  1. #1
Just a quick question to anyone who has played the new "Lock-on" game "Black Shark".

    1) Is it as fun as it looks?

    2) Will a dyed in the wool "IL2 1946" fighter pilot find the transition "do-able"?

    3) And last, but not least...are their any special controllers (ie: joystick) that I will need? I have a stick, and TrackIR, but what else is needed? And/or how is the game set up to be controlled?

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Im guesing you would have to have some sort of a separate throttle lever for controling the colective, since a lot of flying in hellicopters involves using the collective. Im just guesing tbh, so better wait for someone who has actualy tried it before

YES it is as fun as it looks HOWEVER:

If you're an EXPERTEN (Ace) in Il-2 flying foxed wing aircraft you will be in for a surprise if you dont know the intircacies and inherent instabilities of flying a rotary wing aircraft. Everything in DCS:BS is modelled from the engine's intake manifold to the exhaust so engine related effects are modeled like 'vortex ring' effect (where ur engine intake stall the engine itself due to recycling of hot air leading to a stall) as well as 'yaw dampening' effects (where the plane seems to resist YAW movement due to cyclic forward speed) and other things.

The twin rotors of BS 'feels like a Chinook' according to a squadmate of mine who has 6000 hours in a rotary (Thanks [^]Miss*Strega! for the tips!). I actually had to ask Strega for tips on how to fly the BS because it didnt hadle like any other rotary fli-sim I have tried.

It takes a lot of practice for you to be able to handle BS as good as fixed wing aircraft and BS might be the fli-sim where pedals actually makes a whole ot of difference. In most cases the behavior of BS is counter to fixed wing pilot, like when ur losing speed, a fixed wing response is to increase throttle(collective) and when you do so in a rotary you will more likely lose speed and altitude more. The response of a rotary wing pilot would be to increase CYCLIC and in most cases actually reduce throttle/collective.

In my years of flying fli-sim nothing is as realistic and feel very much real as BS. As it is now, Il-2 1946 feels like an arcade game compared to BS. And finally NO I wasnt a fan of LOMAC/FC or Falcon 4:AF either but BS has got my vote! It actually is cutting into my il-2 flying time!

You will find it easier to fly IF you have TIR and a stick that has throttle and stick combo PLUS PEDALS because you will need all the inputs and HAT switches you can find for this sim. Although the game interface is CLICKABLE with the mouse, most people still prefer a HAT SWITCH to handle the most basic controls.

I bought BS a few months back, I love it. Flying is a huge challenge, the engine management detail is great, as well as the damage model and FM.

I unfortunately had to stop for now because my system just can't allow me to fully appreciate the game, as the flight model, graphics, and damage model are too much for my system to deal with when things get interesting .

I'm planning on budgeting $300-400 on a hardware upgrade in the coming months so I can play BS and Empire Total War without frustration.

The game is a lot of fun but it takes a bit to learn the controls. Also, beside your stick, some rudder pedals would help A LOT !!!!

Get familiar with the cockpit setup. The clickable cockpit is a huge help. there are so many buttons knobs and switches that are right there in front of you and you don't need to remember key combinations, or use valuable stick button for them.

The game is really good, i just wish they didn't make it so ANTI-SKINS!!!
Making, testing and installing skins is a big pain in the arse.

ah btw. If you feel too intimidated about the start-up procedures use the "auto start cheat". Will help you get in the air without puling your hair out in frustration.

Great sim but tough. I really only got it to wait for the A-10C expansion.

I'd suggest asking on our forum here http://78sentai.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=24 as Tka has been flying this for some time and could give you a wealth of information.
