Thread: From 1 gig to two | Forums

  1. #1
I ran out yesterday and gotta couple of RAM sticks. I had 1 gig, now I have 2.5 gigs. I haven't really seem a FPS increase just yet, though it does seem to run a little smoother to the eye. Now maybe I'll start the process of tweeking and see what happens. I know this has been an active topic here on the forum and just wanted to share my experience. Any thoughts welcome.

WinXP Doesn't use more then 2 gigs of ram. Set your page file to about 1000 by 1000 for virtual memory. You won't get more Frames per second with extra ram, but you will have smoother gameplay. Also try searching on google for PCI-Latency tool. See if your devices such as video card if it's an AGP card is set to 32, if so change it to 64 for PCI latency and your sound card / IDE devices. The tool doesn't support PCi-Express.

Is your motherboard Dual channel DDR by the way?

Well on the graphic side you need a better card if you want better graphics, but the building of the environment, the generating maps and so on rely on RAM, and thats were your extra gig come in handy. As I stated earlier, it seems GRAW uses up to 800 megs of ram, when you only have one gig it leaves 200 megs for windows, so you need to tweek stuf in order to keep the game running smooth. I had one issue with a crash, asked UBI about it, they told me to re-install, I thought hey my wife doesn't look, and doesn't notice, Ill put in some extra ram, and now the game runs a lot better! The holdup I'm left with is now my graphics card, but since I just bought this pc i will have to wait some time before I buy a new one. A better headset with a decent mic for teamspeak is still on my most wanted gadgets list. (ADSL just got upgraded to 4meg up one down, so that's no holdup anymore)

Actually I think Windoze doesnt know what to do with more than 2.5 gig's of ram.

Either way 2gig's for a gaming system, is fine.

Now for a dedicated server thats different, bandwidth and speed.

For a dedi server I think the Internet speed is the biggest bottleneck. GR1 I played over the lan at home, I noticed that the things went slower, but that was a 10 mbit lan at that time. My old rig doesn't run GRAW so I cant try that, I guess you need a very fast internet account with goor uploading speeds to host a dedi. If it goes around my 4mb up 1 down I will give it a try.

well before install Memory Ram in your machine
you should know what kind of configurations
    is supported in your motherboard

you can't just buy Memo Ram or any others
hardware and install without any knowledge
    of your motherboard.

    example:

if you have 4 slots for memo ram called dual channel memory " A and B "

    possibility of configurations
in this case to intel desktop board
    D975XBX

    Configuration example 1

    Channel A install 1 stick 1GB,533 MHz
    Channel B install 1 stick 1GB,533 MHz

    Configuration example 2

    Channel A install 1 stick 256 MB,533 MHz
    Channel B install 1 stick 256 MB,533 MHz

    Configuration example 3

    Channel A install 1 stick 256 MB,533 MHz
    Channel B install 1 stick 512 MB,533 MHz

note all others memory configurations will
result in single channel memory operation
once again before install new hardware
in your machine make sure to know your
motherboard in order to understand what kind
    of hardware and configurations
will run better in your machine.

my personal experience I install 4 gb
but because my motherboard memory configurations
do not support 1GB X 4 times my machine is not
running correctly in fact the configuration 2GB
1GB X 2 the machine is running more smoothly.

    final advice:

motherboard maker like intel they do some
    hardware configuration test with different
hardware if you build your own pc is a good
idea to purchase only hardware are been testing

    for more info

    lol, ok this is right

Windows can see 3 gigs of ram, not 4,
it is better if u run 2 gigs instead of 2.5 or 3 so that u will be running in dual channel!!!!
get cpu-z and check to c if u are running in dual channel, to get better performance!!
memory will not increase ure fps seeing that memory is not gpu, ure gpu will do ure fps. memory will cause smoothness and faster load times!!

type in CPU-Z in google and download it, its great.
