Thread: Double 'Throat Shot' Success In Convoy Escape - Pics | Forums

  1. #1
I had to share this with you guys. I had a great time last night, after finding a convoy in BF41. I was detected by the two Black Swan Escorts and managed to sink both of them using the stern tubes and what I call 'Throat' shots as they chased after me. What a rush! Apologies if thescreenies are a bit dark.

    Getting into position

    The attack commences

Rumbled! I turn tail to evade

First Black Swan is after me

    Fire Tube 5!

    On course, fingers crossed

    A hit!

    One escort down

    His mate joins the chase

    Gonna be close

    Tube 6 away!

    Another direct hit!

    Time to go

Anybody else had to use 'Throat' shots ? It's very satisfying if the target doesn't change course!

Excellent post there RJ and some brilliant screenies

Takes alot of guts to take those destroyers on face to face. I like your periscope screenies with the destroyer gunning down on you - very Das Boot I think

Just like Clark Gable sinking the Akakaze in the Bungo Straits in "Run Silent Run Deep" (1958). Great sub movie. Great patrol and great screenies ~S~

very nice work, i'm getting to the point where convoys are becoming much harder to approach and i'm trying to get better at these kind of shots as i'm getting caught more often. They can be very difficult. Just need more practice, these screenies will help!!

Lovely shots..... I enjoy it when DDs and Frigates start chasing you and you just drop something from behind for a "Hi, how are ya..."

Most cases they just run straight at you with the idea of DCing you or ramming you BUT they only find a lonely torp in the way

@ Trident, my one piece of advice if you have to try a throat shot is to wait until the very last minute, wait until the DD has stopped snaking around and is coming directly at you - just remember you'll need at least 300m seperation, bearing in mind the closing speed of the DD, in order for the torp to go live. They're fun if you pull them off - very Hollywood as Worf101 says!

    Hi RJ
Yea that is a great tactic they think that they are going to ram us but what they get is a eel on the troat I have use it some times and once in one of my best patrols(145k) it was head to head shot(playing chicken with the poor bastard ) with a v&v dd and he lost but was close the eel detonate on the DC ramps and almost ram me after fire the eel i made a crash dive lucky did not hit me but close awesome thing love it every minut but I forget to take picâ´s it happen to fast I was taking a shot to a T2 whem all the suddenly "we are taking damage her kaleun" what I see the DD geting near of us only get time to change course and fire whit the tcd inputs from the T2 lucky was that I was goin to a inpack shot at the T2 and it was 5m I think but it work

It looks like both hits on the Black Swans were to the stern. Were you using the acoustic torpedo, by chance? If not, were they magnetic or contact detonations?

Also, I notice your target speed, range, and heading values in the clipboard are filled in. How did you get the data, i.e. are you estimating, or do you have the WP help? I would imagine you don't need much in the way of data to do a throat shot - angle on bow of zero, range doesn't matter much, nor does target speed. Just line 'em up, set the depth, wait for the proper range, and "LOSS".

Thsi was a well used tactic by US Submarine Commanders in the Pacific ," Down the throat shot" I think they called it

Not sure why the Nazi's didnt use the same tactic on the Atlantic.
