Thread: I did a search on this Diesel Engine... this is what i found? | Forums

"Diesel Engine: An OpenGL Quake3 Arena Map Viewer, written in c++. It supports a variety of features including volumetric fog, portals/mirrors, items, basic entities, skyboxes/cloudlayers, videotextures and multitexturing for up to 6 texture units. Open source, GPL" <-- this might be misleading but I'm not sure...

Sounds good so far if GRIN is using OpenGL... can someone elaborate?

I found another article... ie GRIN & Diesel Engine... Case Study Gallery - GRIN

"That’s why GRIN has developed their own 3D-engine, called Diesel Engine, a robust multi-purpose platform. The 3D-engine is the heart of the game and determines how things behave in the gaming environment. It handles movements, bump mapping, specular lighting, bones, chrome positional sound and music, as well as dynamic surfaces and more. All this comes together to insure that there are no limits when developing a GRIN game."

GRIN made the games Ballistics and Pheonix Rising with their Diesel engine. Since they are vehicle games it shows that it is capable of doing large environments.

At the same time it's probably along the lines of the Ureal or LilithTech Engine and is constantly evolving.

"GRIN is also ahead of the competition when it comes to animation. They have their own motion capture studio where the characters are brought to life. The studio is a large room with 480 IR-cameras to register every move of an actor. The studio has been developed in cooperation with Hypervision, and GRIN has adjusted the software solution to meet the requirements of the gaming industry. "

â€ÂOur MoCap studio have made us 3000% more efficientâ€Â, says Bo. â€ÂAt GRIN we have one animator, and with our studio he can make as many animations as five animators using a more traditional methods. Efficiency is one of our key words. We want to be aheadâ€"first, but not biggestâ€Â, he says.

I hope these guys make a good game. The fact that I've never really heared about them before, doesn't fill me with confidence though.

Me neither, but I assume ubi know that this is really their last chance to get the PC player back. I'm sure the developpment will be well supervised.

Well, I hadn't heard about RSE before they started their Tom Clancy line of games, which turned out to be "quite ok" . Therefore, I'm willing to give GRIN a chance.

that is indead misleading. What you have found is a mapviewer for q3maps.good work.

maybe THIS is the correct one?

"Rudolf Diesel developed the idea for the diesel engine and obtained the German patent for it in 1892. His goal was to create an engine with high efficiency. Gasoline engines had been invented in 1876 and, especially at that time, were not very efficient. "

Seems like Grin is actually using a licensed engine from some guy back in 1892...hmm..I thought this was next gen?
