    Silent Hunter IV: Underway
    THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

The big buzz on the web is that Ubisoft has begun planning and work on Silent Hunter IV. Now Subsim can confirm this is not wishful thinking or rumor. The new dev team has been assembled, returning many of the SH3 vets from programming, graphics, and design, under the direction of Producer Ionut Grozea and Project Manager Emil Gheorghe. The team is currently in the planning phase with work to begin at once.

Silent Hunter IV will return the series to the Pacific, with American submarines taking the starring role. SH4 will use the same game engine and dynamic campaign as SH3 with some improvements.

I'm not really excited to hear this. The project is only at the beginning of planning. We'll be waiting a long time for the release of the final product.

Reading between the lines I am adopting a cynical attitude until I am convinced otherwise. The same people who released an unfinished product and then abandoned its support are now assembling again for another project. We are promised more of the same with a hint of improvements. Subs in the Pacific means they don't have to develop a wolfpack engine. I smell a rewrapped SH3.

    Until then, "I'm from Missouri."

Rewrapped sounds about right -- it says they use the game graphics and campaign engines. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but in this case it means they'll probably reuse all the game killing bugs too.

I can't wait to 3/4 of the way through SH4 and have my career irretrievably corrupted.

    hi guys,

dont say that, SH3 engine has a lot of capabilities and even unfinished has done very well so far, with the help of the comunity of course, but if the comunity could do so mutch the developers could do more!!!. I think we will get an imroved version of SH3, as game -simulation- Now they dont need to build things from the begining but will improve and add things...
something like VII type as new torpedos conning tower etc. the main body still the same. Bugs free thats impossible..

Using the old engine and campain means most of the work is done. Faster to come out. If they do improve/repair some of its problem, then they have not abandoned it.

Being US is ok. Im use to it. Was hoping to be IJN to face the increasing odds as the war goes by like the Uboats did.

In the end, no matter what, I will get it reguardless...

I agree that the engine of SH3 would make a good starting point for SH4, but I would definitely like to see improvements and the current well-documented bugs worked out. This would mean:

AA gunners will fire when they should, not stand there like mannequins in a store window while the boat is attacked.

Crew management [if present] repaired so the crew actually has the stamina of real humans, not tiring after two hours of watch time.

PT-type boats should fire torpedoes [thought I'd put this in for JU88 ]

Aircraft will drop the correct ordnance.

This is a very short list. There are other bugs that are well-known and should also be eliminated in the next release. If SH4 is released and these bugs are not eliminated, then it should deserve to bomb in the market.

P.S. No Star Force! Anything else but Star Force.

Agreed. But I would really like a new graphics engine.. you know... SHIII's one isn't really fantastic, maybe a water shader improvement would do it... but I'll get it anyway.
