    What's the trick to countering?

Do you have to hit the counter button before your pursuer hits the assassinate button?

I've seen my pursuers coming from quit a distance before and tried to counter once it looked like they were moving on, but nothing.

I've also tried to bolt, and been "sucked back" into an assassination from ungodly distances. That seems like a game issue that needs fixing.

But is it possible to use counters without smoke bombs?

And what is the game "trigger" for them to work successfully?

    Thanks,

What do you mean by countering? Dodging, or Stunning?

If you're talking about dodging, that only happens when a smoke bomb is thrown just before the killer hits X. If it happens at any other time though, it's just a result of lag. If there's a huge ping spike right before a kill or a stun, it goes into the dodge animation to compensate. This prevents lag-switchers from cheating, basically.

If you're talking about stunning, yeah, you can do it without smoke/crackers/mute, you just have to catch em really off-guard! The button for stunning is B on Xbox (the right button), not sure what that is on PS3, I forget now. You'll know you can stun them then, because when you're close to them a big B (or whatever the PS3 button is) will pop up above their head. Hope that helps!

IIRC PS3 is O for stun. Stunning is tough to get, but once you get the hang of it and know how it works it get's easier to know when you should do it, not necessarily easy to actually do.

So far most of my stuns have come from the following situations

Blended in a stationary group with one or two of my loadout. They attack wrong one, I stun

Blended in a mobile group with people of my own loadout. Either they attack the wrong guy and I stun or they come up to the group and move around inside it trying to figure out which one is me. This one gives me enough time to lock on and stun usually.

Standing blended in a group and smoke bomb when the obvious assassin makes his way over.

Finally, been having varying degrees of success on the team based game mode, round 1 hunt, 2 hunted. Was on a team last night where one of the guys had the perk that would turn an entire group of people into the same as you. We all stuck together, 4 of us in a mobile group of 8 or so mercenaries. Got a lot of stuns when the enemy team would either come up and attack the wrong person, or come up and take one of us down, then another would move over to stun them.

Worked relatively well for awhile too. We could see them shadowing us for awhile, unsure of when to attack or not for fear of being stunned. Kept their kills low and let us win by a large margin when we attacked lol.

All in all, stuns, while tough to pull off aren't really meant to be a relied upon tactic by themselves. Walking up to your assassin as he walks up to you is not going to end well. Sneaking behind him in a cloud of smoke as he's killing the guy he thought was you though can't help but bring a grin to my face sometimes lol

You can't counter your pursuer. Stop trying. You can counter your TARGET when they try to STUN you, by pressing assassinate while they're winding up to punch you in the face.

That's because you're trying to COUNTER your pursuer. NOT going to happen. Run, break line of sight, hide somewhere near a lookalike (use disguise/morph if you have them), and wait for them to approach again. If they run after you when you're getting away, great, you started a chase and they're trailing behind already - breaking line of sight and hiding gives you 100 point escape bonus unless they get lucky on their guess which one is you.

If they follow without a chase, they'll stop for a moment to try and pick which one is you - if you're lucky and they're standing close enough, you might be able to turn around and stun them before they see you coming. If they're standing a few steps away, then you just have to hope they guess wrong (hint: they usually do if you're morphed/disguised)

It's caused by lag. Fix the internet and the problem will go away. It's already about as fixed as it's likely to get - far less of a problem than it was in the beta.

Yes. You counter a stun, not an assassination.
