This is off-topic for sure, but it regards something very near and dear to my heart. On Sunday, September 16th at 2:45pm, Robert Jordan, author of the Wheel of Time series, succumbed to Amyloidosis and died. His last words were of love to his wife Harriett, who stood by his side until the very end.

An extraordinary hit to the literary community, and a fine man. He will be missed.

I've never read anything by him, but it's always a shame when we lose a creator.

Although it's certainly sad to hear this news it comes as absolutely no surprise to me that the Wheel of Time series will never see an end. I started reading that infernal mess well over a dozen years ago. I used to reccomend it to friends, until around 5 or 6 books when it still showed absolutely no sign of wrapping up. I then told friends to avoid it like the plague. Each consecutive book got worse, introducing more loose ends while not tying up any of the old from several books previous. Each book took longer to come out than the last and was shorter. Jordan had written himself into a hole that he couldn't write out of. Actual story content became less and less, to the point where he spent more time describing the physical appearance of the multitude of characters, their hairstyles, complexion, stature, piercings and tattoos, nationality, and nail polish. He spent particular attention to describing the characters clothes in minute detail, cut, style, material, colour, accessories and embroidery. I was absolutely sick of the series by Winter's Heart but kept reading because I had spent God knows how many hours, over how many years on the series. Hours, days and weeks that could have been much better invested. To stop reading them after so long would seem such a pointless waste of all that time. Surely, SURELY, by the tenth book there'd be some kind of pay off, some justification for the hundreds of dollars spent, the mindboggling manhours put in. Crossroads of Twilight was the last straw. It was the absolute worst novel I have ever read. It had been 3 years since the 9th book, the longest gap between publications yet, and Crossroads of twilight was ridiculously short for that amount of time. Jordan somehow managed to write a book that did nothing to advance the storyline. Lots of description of embroidery, nothing in the way content or advancing the plot.

I recently read Knife of Dreams after foreswearing it since publication, but only because my father had bought me a copy as a birthday gift, after I specifically told him I did not want it.

Knife of Dreams started to bring things back on track but was not great by any means. Jordan would still have to write several more books to satisfactorly conclude the tangled web of subplots he had woven.

Supposedly he was going to bring The Wheel of Time to close with the 12th installment, even if it meant it would be "1500 pages long". (the equivalent of two or three more books). He'd been under pressure from fans and critics for years by this point and was probably feeling the pinch from his publisher as well.

I'm sorry to have spilled that rant here. Despite all my harsh words I never would have wished any ill on Robert Jordan. And as a one-time fan I'm saddened to hear this news. Jordan was only 58.

Alot of people seem to have the same impression, so it's fine. I never really had any problems with any of the Wheel of Time books, other than book 9 which was a snore fest. The rest seemed to be pretty well on track. He was in the process of finishing up Book 12 at the time of his death, and he indeed had stated this would be the final book, no matter how large. According to a Forbes interview, it was scheduled to be sent to editing in early 2008, for a 2009 release date. They'd also spoken briefly about what would befall the series should he die before the final book, he'd indicated that his wife Harriet, might finish the last pieces, as I'm sure she's well aware of how this whole thing is supposed to go down. Anyway, I'm going to wait patiently for the 12th book, because I really have no other alternative lol.
