I think we will be able to simulate a conscious human being in a computer simulation.

Biology has startling similarities with Binary code
"We are only seeking Man. We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds. A single world, our own, suffices us; but we can't accept it for what it is. We are seaching for an ideal image of our own world" - Solaris

Why bother? We have more conscious human beings than we need.

Well for one, disease simulation. Although I somehow doubt anyone will ever code a full simulation of a human, I think smaller systems will be. Parts of the brain etc, for use in epilepsy research.
