Thread: Distances and their signification | Forums

    Hello all,

I wonder since a while about the distance numbers displayed in IL2/AEP and Pacific Fighters. Maybe the community can help me on this.

When I see a distance icon displayed over another aircraft, like "1.0", or "0.5" etc, are this distances in meters? And if so, does "1.0" mean "100" and "0.5" 50? What system do this numbers follow?

    Thanks for any help,

    They are kilometres

    e.g. 1.0 km

And as an idea, I tend not to shoot till the enemy is at 0.25km i.e. 250m which is just when the plane is a bit bigger than the reticule.

    Adjust your convergence accordingly!

Thanks Joe-90. Mhhh, that is a bit weird. I think that the game displayes an image that gives you the feeling that planes/objects are closer then the distance indication says, especially when going under "0.3", which would be 300 m if I understood you correctly. I might be mistaken, but I think that an average fighter plane which fills half the reticle of a Bf 109 (REVI) should be 250m away, according to a Luftwaffe shooting guide from WW2. I have to check that again....

    Thanks for your reply,

yep, I don't think 'actual' size is precise. There are compromises between real sizes and compensating for trying to fit real life into a 17" monitor.

Especially when (if?) you go for more immersion and switch icons off as in most war servers!

There are many many MANY threads on this topic - just do a search on 'dots' and you will get the idea!

The game's models are made up of several LOD's (Level Of Detail). The closer a plane gets, the more polygons will be displayed (more detailed model).
