Thread: How young is too young? | Forums

I'm completely loving Rocksmith - I only wish it had been around 30 years ago. If so, I'd be a guitar god by now.

That said, I can always live vicariously through my son. How young do you think he could start Rocksmith (with a Squier Mini guitar) without getting overly frustrated and swearing off guitar forever? What's the typically-recommended beginner guitarist age at the low end?

I think he will let you know ... If you keep rocking and he sees you and he thinks its cool and shows an interest he will let you know. He will start asking you if he can play, then after while you 2 are fighting over game time.

Jeff Healey was so young he had to hold the guitar in his lap, never did learn to hold it the way others do as a result. I think I read where he was 4.

A little meter stick (pardon the pun) on if a kid can play or not is that you need to get a kid guitar (6-strings, it will be smaller). If the kid can wrap his fingers around the neck, and touch his pointing finger to his thumb, he can play. If he can't, wait a year.

My son is 4.5 years old and wanting to play. He still can't handle fretting, but he's at least interested.
