First, I have TMO and RSRD for TMO running, along with some various fixes for those two mods. As far as I know, everything is installed right.

I'm off the NW coast of Guam, mid January 42. I thought I would do some recon around the coast and see what I could find. Coming in on the surface at night I got two sound contacts near the shore area, one developed into a firm map contact (this is my first career with contacts on), and eventually ID'd as a Somers Class DD. Cool! So I steamed in closer and spotted the ship closer in to shore. A Shiratsu DD. OK? They're only about 6000 yards apart, and nothing's happening.

So I figured what the heck, went to periscope depth and slammed it full ahead to go after the Shiratsu. Got within 2000 yards before it even turned towards me. Fired a 3 torp spread at 0 AOB and nailed it. Now it finally starts pinging me. These guys are drunk or something. So I surfaced intending to shoot it out with the gun, because, why not. When it sees me it starts firing off depth charges. About 4 times, before it finally starts shelling me. Well, that didn't last very long.

As far as I can tell, the Somers never engaged.

The weather is clear, no moon, light fog and 15kt wind. I don't see how the two DD's did not see each other.

I made a save just before my little experiment. I may go back and try to start shelling the Shiratsu from next to the Somers, see if that does anything. Is it possible they just did not notice each other?

Not sure what's going on there. About the only time that happens is a base change, where the US loses a port to Japan. I've never not seen ships engage playing RSRD. Early war it's possible the crews had poor ratings. Honestly, I've never been to Guam that early, so who knows. I'll check the campaign files and see what's up.

Are you sure you got everything installed, you can tell the difference?

Try the save and get the JP to chase you near the Somers, they should engage.

I'd say that being 6,000 yds apart,in a light fog, they may not see each other, especially if they're not moving. It'll be interesting to find out. I'd try what MWolfe suggests.

I'm wondering if your gamma settings may be too bright. In reality (in-game), conditions may be too dark for visual observation but incorrect gamma settings may belie just how dark it really is. That is, making it appear brighter than it really is (in the game parameters). I've been in similar situations where it is so dark (and with light fog these conditions are compounded), you can't lock onto a vessel that's 3000yds away.

I missed the 6000 yard part. That is the max range ships shot at with TMO. That's probably the issue, being night with fog, probably need them around 3000 yards.

On reflection, I'm going to theorize that since I was able to get so close to the Shiratsu and the kind of strange retaliation behavior it had that its crew is not of the highest caliber. Maybe the Somers is not either and they are just beyond each other's detection range.

Now I've got to whip up a good combined attack. Man, I wish I could report the contact to the DD.

I can't find anything about the Shiratsu type destroyer on the internet. Armament, etc. I'd hate to lead the Somers into a mismatch and maybe get us both cooked.

Don't worry, you suffer no points or problems with the Admiral if the Somers get's his arse kicked and it probably would. I've led JP DD's into ports before and let the ships go at it, then go in and clean up what's left ..

Again, all crews have ratings from competent to elite, they get better as the war progresses. Most in RSRD are veteran late war
