Guys, Ive read the torpedo tutorials etc, and practiced, but the boats curve around way too much, so the second hes on his course i shoot off the torpedo, at about 1400metres or less, by the time it reaches him hes curved off in the other direction again...
I dont get how to make them hit home...
Someone got some tips to share?

I am reaching here, but how about getting closer?

It sounds like you up against a classic zig zag pattern. Did he start out like that or did you alert him to your position? Can you do an end -run around him and get to his front? like kiwi says you are probably going to have to get in close.

Although I don't have the game, I can probably throw out a few general items that should help you send that torp screamin' down on your opponent. First, you said the enemy ship pulls evasive manuevers? Good - as it should. The biggest key, and more important the most crucial was the element of surprise. If you fire a torp, and miss - and the enemy is aware of it, don't expect to take another salvo so easily. If I knew a sub was out there, I'd be weaving left and right too. Miss the first time, you'll more than likely miss the second time. Disengage and stalk - and fire much later when the enemy is unaware of your existence again.

Also, torpedos in clear water are pretty clear to see. If a ship can spot your torp, who's to say he can't deke out of the way in time? The best bet, is to get as close as you can (it either being night and surfaced perhaps or submerged during daylight) without risking detection, and put your torps to the max speed setting (which ultimately decreases max range, but if you're in close - who cares?). An enemy ship has a harder time evading an incoming torp if it's bearing down on them. Just make sure you're in the operational range for the current speed setting you have for the torps.

Hope this helps. *shrug* Perhaps someone with the game can make better suggestions.

You're about 100 meters shy of what the U-boat Commander's Handbooksays is maximum range for torpedo attack. 500 to 1500 meters is what it says. Try getting closer.

I won't tell you to get closer again, I think you caught that drift... When you say you shot the first time, did you try a salvo of 2? I think it said that somewhere incase the first doesn't hit. Worth a try. But I think Halifax40's advice will get you some hits!

The U-Boat Commander's handbook says that it's always best to shoot a spread of two or three torpedoes at a ship, even at close range, and even at ships that are dead in the water.

How many torpedos does a sub normally have ready to fire, ready to reload, and total?

I couldn't imagine it's that many to be wasting them so liberally. Then again 1 hit from a 3-salvo is better than 4 singles that all miss. And a full ship is worth 40 torps.

Using lots of torps doesen't suprise me. From what I've read even modern subs would still launch salvos of 3+ (in a spread too) . It's far better to be sure you will get the kill than skimp on the torps espcially when you have the element of surprise. In real life it's even more important.
