At night, or sometimes during the day (no escort or enemy aircraft in the vicinity) a very effective tactic is what I call the "E-boat style" attack. This is a high speed attack wherein one cons the boat much like one would a PT boat. Approach from dead abeam, close to 400 meters, aim carefully with all TDC values set to zero (you're using the submarine itself to aim the torpedos) and Los! Don't forget to open the tube doors first, timing is everything in this type of attack. It is almost 100% effective if executed correctly.
