Thread: Time compression CPU slowdown | Forums

  1. #11
Weird. Of course, nothing ever works well for me in the end. Something always has to screw up. lol.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times though with the same result every time. Even running a registry cleaner, etc (ccleaner) after each time.

I just read another post and have another idea.

Check to see if when you load the game it loads with SH4.exe and not gu.exe.

Right click the icon on your desk top and go to properties, click that. Then check to see what the exe is.

To read more about this gu, sh4 thing go here.

Well since I got it from steam, I don't think I have a gu.exe or anything. It launches from steam itself.

I've had this exact same problem. I played SH4 (Steam version) no problem at all on high time compressions on my high spec PC (i7 920 @ 2.67GHz, 6GB RAM, ATI 4800 512MB GDDR5, Vista 64bit) but then upgraded to the U-boat missions and frame rates collapse at above 128x time compression all of a sudden.

Anybody found a solution to this?

    Hello Bobo12345,

    Welcome to the SH Forum.

I have not seen this problem mentioned on this forum except by this thread. I have seen people say they have compression problems but it was because they had a slow computer.

I bought the U-boat add-on and installed it and my compression rate did not get slower.

Maybe someone will read this post and have some type of solution.

    Hey TrowaBarton1455,

I know this is a really old thread. But I just got the game and am having exactly the same problem. Definitely not my hardware, the original SH4 wasn't doing it. It's just the expansion pack.

Did you ever figure out a solution to your problem?

    Thanks,
    TJ

    Bump! Any workarounds or ideas?

I'm experiencing the same problems with steam version. Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific worked fine. ( I played it quite a bit before ever installing the uboat missions mod) The mod also updates the game to version 1.5(which was my main appeal for the game updates that included changes like reflecting hull damage, better crew management, etc).

I installed the uboat missions and experience time compression issues (seemingly when there are a lot of radio contact convoys on the nav map). For example, time compression appears to work fine when travelling from Pearl Harbor to Midway. But once you get about half way between Midway and the Sea of China, going past 128x time compression is almost impossible. The game seems to crash periodically as well once this state has been achieved.(regardless if your using time compression or not).

    I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a Intel Core i7 870 with 4gigs of Ram and a Geforce GTS 450.

I'm looking for any fix, workaround or anything.

    Thanks,
    Talon

Greetings, talonimhotep. Welcome to the SH Forums.

Since you are having problems with the Steam version of SHIV, might I suggest that you try contacting Steam and see if they could over you any suggestions for a fix. Since it is Steam's version of the game they should have had similar problems and been contacted by other people. Hence they may be able to offer a solution for your problem.

There might be a another possible solution. I remember that when SHIV first came out that there was a similar problem with too much info being broadcast in the game which bogged the game down. You could try loading one of the supermods which have been streamlined and the lag is not so great and a drain on your resources of your computer. Try using TMO or RFB and see if that might help.

You can find TMO v2.5 here.

You can find RFB v2.0 here

If you still experience problems come back and we'll see if a solution can be found for you.

Thanks tambor198 for your reply. I'm going to check out that TMO v2.5 and see if it does the trick. Ubi tells me to talk to Steam and Steam tells me to talk to Ubi; neither really want to help so I've given up on that route. It's an old game now so I don't really expect either to be very helpful with it; which is perfectly understandable. I'm thinking either TMO v2.5 or RFB 2.0 will clear it up. If not, oh well...next.

Again, thanks for your help; Will post again once I check it out (hopefully without a 3 month delay this time). Got all jacked up with work.

    Thanks,
    Talon

Well, I tried TMO 2.5. A lot of spiffy stuff ..great mod. However, the same problems exist. Time compression just doesn't work right with uboat addon(version 1.5) It seemed to do better, I even managed to sink a ship(albiet I had to deck gun it to death since the autolock won't hold for longer than 3 seconds) I'd really love to learn and do the manual targeting. I just don't have the patience to properly learn when the game just crashes ALL THE TIME.

I managed to proceed to a destination, got an order to sink local shipping. I did. Got all the way back to Pearl and as soon as I got close to friendly ships in the area time compression started bogging bad then the game crashed. I might try RFB v2.0 but at this point I don't think it will help. I've tried several computer builds with different OS's, different video cards and different processors, all with more than enough resources. They all crash seemingly randomly but more so when you are near multiple contacts.

Thanks anyway, I'll give RFB a try then once that doesn't work I'll delete the game and think about it again.(I've wasted too much time already trying to get the game to work)
