Thread: Need help with nVidia 7900 GTX video settings | Forums

  1. #1
    I've migrated from an AGP ATI X800XT PE card/board to a nVidia 7900GTX PCI-E board. So far I must admit I am terribly disappointed.

    However, there may still yet be a solution short of packing up this card and returning it for an X1900XT.

    Does anyone have one of these cards that they have managed to get to run correctly? If so, what video settings are you using in il2setup, and what video settings are you using in the Display tool in Control Panel??

    I'm using the 84.21 Forceware drivers and having nothing but troubles. Any suggestions about what is working for you are most welcome.

    PLEASE don't tell me how much you like an ATI card -- I'm seriously looking for "this has worked for me" suggestions. I'm not looking for a flame war.

    Two 7900GTX-512Mb in SLI mode here, clocked at 685Mhz (from 650Mhz standard).

    No problems whatsoever.
    Running 82.43 beta drivers (but all drivers caused no problems)

    Changing from ATI to NVIDIA is a problem though.

    1. Make sure you uninstalled all ATI graphics drivers first !
    If not, look for some special programs which can delete all remainings of the ATI drivers from your system. Guru3d is a good address to look for these things...

    2. make a two back copies of your conf.ini name ones MYOLDconf.ini the other MYNEXTconf.ini

    3. delete your conf.ini

    4. run il2setup and select NVIDIA card and save

    5. run IL2FB, select perfect mode and look how this goes

    6. If everything went well, your IL2FB must be working BUT your joystic and other settings are gone. so now you know your 7900GTX is working fine....

    7. rename this conf.ini into NVIDIAconf.ini

    8a. Open the MYNEXTconf.ini with an editor like notepad
    go to the area that starts with [Render_OpenGL] in this area you have all commands related to OpenGL graphics (which are the ones you should be using in the game).
    DELETE ALL THIS AREA

    8b. Open the NVIDIAconf.ini with an editor like notepad and go to the area that starts with [Render_OpenGL]
    COPY ALL THE COMMANDS IN THIS AREA and paste it in your MYNEXTconf.ini at the same area where you had deleted before.

    9. close and save your MYNEXTconf.ini under the name conf.ini.

    10. test IL2FB again. It should be working now well with the 7900GTX and you should be having all previous commands and joystick settings as before.

    Good luck, hope it helps....

    This card should work fine. I have one and it is awesome. I too went from an ATI X800XTPE on an Intel platform to an AMD platform with the Nvidia card. My framerate virtually doubled. I have 4XAA and 2XAF enabled and run 1600x1200x32.

    @Manos1,

    Thank you for your response, you were very helpful. Sometimes one can't see the forest ... Your various postings in the "nVidia frustration" thread also helped greatly.

    The card now works -- the artifacting I was experiencing, and the locking, is gone (I also reinstalled the drivers, which helped a bit too, I believe. It was largely the result of the ATI settings in my config.ini file. The OS build is fresh, but the game installation is a re-copy from an image.

    However, try as I might, I cannot get anything but flat water, and black at that. Grrrr.

    It's been a long day and I'm tired of messing with the settings on this card. One more day and if I can't get real looking water, back the card goes and gets replaced with an ATI X1900XT.

    At least I can say, honestly, that I gave nVidia a try.

    Thanks again for your help.

    In the conf.ini file go to the section [Render_OpenGL]

    Make sure that your settings are 'Perfect' and click the 'Use stencil buffer' in IL2 setup.
    Make sure that you have these settings:

    HardwareShaders=1

    Water=4

    Gents,

    Thank you for your help; your suggestions have been (mostly) successful. Even with "Perfect" settings (which, by the way, turns "HardwareShaders" from 0 to 1 when enabled) and Water=4 I still get dark, flat water.

    I suspect the solution is in the settings in il2setup.exe.

    Here is what I have currently (set by il2setup.exe when I selected "nVidia GeForce" as the card):

    Settings: Custom

    Texture mipmap filter = bilinear
    Texture Compression = none

    All the remaining options are UNCHECKED except:

    Dither
    Vertex Arrays
    Multi-texture
    Combine
    Secondary Color

    Would one of you who actually can get something other than flat water with this card share the settings you have on this screen?

    Again, thanks for your help. Although I have "flat" water, at least the card is working.

    In IL2 setup first screen, make sure you are on OpenGL. Video tab set to 6800.... card and thats it.

    I think the best thing for you to do is to send that card to HB and order the ATI......
