After some 55 hours of play, I finished FC2 yesterday -sp only/hardcore). So here some thoughts on it -strictly my view-. FC2 DOES have a lot going for it. Concerning the outlook, the nice environments and the huge area to play in, here I have no criticism to level against it. A pity is only that one should have been able to climb the many hills, a lot of places where you could easily climb up, you get blocked by invisible walls. Of course a hill poses an obstacle, but many of them SHOULD've been accessible. It would've enhanced the freedom of wandering about. The missions themselves pose variety, sure, but they lack a progressive effect, you don't have an idea that you effect the story line. I got the feeling I was only earning diamonds, and had to travel distances. It would've been nicer if you'd run in on the Jackal -unexpectedly- on one of those missions. (and he then just getting away, and you're not in a position to pursue then).
The finding of the diamonds in the field is like a gathering expedition. Sometimes I played whole sessions just finding diamonds, not doing missions at all -a cleverly added addiction part-. What is a good thing, is the way you run up against the map border, going dizzy, getting blurred vision. So much more elegant than just a screen message like 'you're going out of play-area, go back or game = terminated'.
I played some 30 main missions, about 17 side/tower/buddy missions, and collected some 750 diamonds, of which 212 I found in the field.
Things that could've been given a LOT more attention from UBI, is the setup. The layout and options of the menu's could've been made much more beautiful and elaborate (think of the one's in FC and Crysis). The AI (good as they are when sniping them from a distance) can be perfected. They can find you too easily, especially at night. And the blood and gore eruptions are just plain silly, nice for 12 year old kids, but UBI (and other game producers too) quite underestimate the number of adults playing. (I'm over 40). The more realistic the games become, the more appeal to adults. I liked the open-ending of the game. It's a far better finale than either FC's or Crysis's. And it opens the option for a sequence.
The lack of key-mapping and the missing 'prone' position I deem serious flaws. About the respawning checkpoints, I already posted here; you should've been able to set respawn time yourself, and/or be able to bribe them for free passage -that should spur you on to earn diamonds! I liked the day-night cycle, but the environment at night should've been darker. Now only the sky is dark... the landscape isn't. And the prolific number of cars....They should give you a fixed number...Then you will try to drive more carefully. Or put in cars that don't work. Or suddenly run out of gas. How about buying fuel for diamonds?
Concerning the many bugs in the game, maybe I've been lucky, maybe it's my NO-DVD .exe file, or the fact that I gutted out SeCurom
of my system, but I've encountered NO problems at all. I've accumulated some 500 saves, deleted sometimes dozens of them while playing, starting FC2, choosing at random a saved game; it all worked. I played version 1.00, as the patch immediately destroyed my sound/music. I used -with many thanks again to the maker- the FOV to fix the wide-screen. I used the older Nvidia 1.77 drivers, and had a more or less consistent 40-50fps. This at 1680 x 1050.
I may give it a replay, IF the upcoming patch does do something about these respawning checkpoints. Would be so much more relaxing just to pass by, and the guards not being there anymore, of just grudgingly letting you pass, or stopping you and demanding some diamonds. In the intro-movie they do so...why not later on too?
For now I will have a go at Call of Duty 5, WoW. I only do SP, I started out with DOOM (yes, MS-DOS era) loved X-wing/Tiefighter (also DOS). In Windows my first FPS games were the Medal of Honor games, which I played all. Others were Covert Strike (also HUGE area's to play in, and sometimes not easy at all!), Blackhawk down I liked, a weak AI, but again, spacious maps. And, not to forget, the Call of Duty series, of which the fourth -modern warfare- I found most impressive, in spite of the small area's to play in, and the scripted events. Vietcong I liked, also quite realistic, and Men of Valor (also Vietnam). Just before I started FC2, I played Brothers in Arms, Hell's Highway. Also quite good, and a true story line too. The previous ones of that series I played too.
Far Cry -when I fist saw it- blew my mind, the tropics, revisited. But the monsters detracted for me from the game. This same held true also for Crysis, even more eye-candy. The fact that FC and Crysis generated so many custom-made maps (just try 'the resort' custom map for Crysis, a true beauty!) keeps me playing it. In general I can say, the more realistic the game is (no monsters/aliens) the more I like it.
I hope UBI releases the SDK, as many people out there crave to enhance this game in various ways. Can't say anything about MP,
that's not my point of interest.
