After 12 months of preparations, the invasion of the Soviet Union began at 03:15 Sunday, 22 June 1941 with around 3 million soldiers from Germany and Austria and around 500.000 regular soldiers and volunteers from Finland ,Croatia, Hungary ,Romania, Slovakia, Italy, France and Spain moving eastwards covered by massive airstrikes on airfields in Latvia , Lithuania, Estonia , Belorussia , Ukraine and the soviet occupied parts of Poland.

More than 2000 soviet airplanes were destroyed on the ground in the first 24 hours of the attack.


Here is the original newsreel featuring the annoucement of Barbarossa to the public in Germany and France. The Wochenschau produced bilingual newsreels from 1941 onwards.

Found only the french version but this one has at least an english translation you can find in the video description on youtube. (Click the youtube button on the control bar to get to youtube)

The annoucement came via radio first, hence the newsreel shows footage from the radio stations.

It was sold as a pre-emptive strike against a british-soviet conspiracy for attacking Germany.

The pool Foe works at had to be drained, and the sand-and-gravel filter restocked. In the meantime, the old sand happened to spit out through the jets. It made some very interesting patterns!
