Thread: About autopilot... | Forums

I just would like to know if this happens to everyone...Yesterday, I flew the third mission in the Su 27 campaign. Once airborne, I switched the autopilot ON (I was in Nav-Enroute mode) but it flew erratically, not surpassing the assigned altitude and making violent turns...When I disengaged it, I found the palne to be completely trimmed to the left and down.I first thought my cougar had given up!
Well, I ended the mission and tried the Su 33 Quick mission. So, again, I engaged the AP and it did its job wonderfully. I made an auto land.

Once again, I loaded the Su 33 mission, and engaged the AP, but disengaged a few minutes later, finding that the plane was badly trimmed.

So, is this normal when disengaging the AP??

    Thx!

It's completely normal, after disengaging autopilot it is recommended you reset your trim settings (ctrl+T)

Perhaps an explanation of how the autopilot functions would also be helpful.

When in NAV mode, the autopilot does not simply fly you to the next waypoint. It attempts to put you on the path from the previous waypoint to the next waypoint. If you are off of this path the autopilot can go kind of crazy trying to put you on it. It will eventually stabilize if you give it a chance.

The reason for this behaviour (following the path rather than a line from where you are to the waypoint) is that the programmed flight path is usually set to avoid known threats. Deviating from the path could place you directly over an enemy SAM site.

Thanks! I've been meaning to ask that same question for a while now. I gave up using AP in the A10 Campaigns because of this, and also because the routes in the A10 Campaign suck, and actually fly you over more air defenses than if you just skip to another waypoint, or pick your own route.

Ctrl-T is a good tip, I never thought about using it.
