Thread: Lan Party Help | Forums

In a few weeks I will be having a Lan Party, can someone tell me what all I will need to do to make sure everything runs smooth. I have heard people talk about having lag at lan parties and such and don't want to have those problems or any other problems that I can easily avoid. Thanks

No replies yet, was hoping gunny or lawless would be all over this. I tried to download the pdf document referenced in this post: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=t...2442#185102442

I was unable to find it, if Black_Ice_ is around maybe he could post an updated link to the file. thanks

Sorry bud, my expertise is not in the lan department but you might look at this link. Perhaps it might help with a few settings. I believe the part about "if you don have an internet connection" may be of assistance. There have been posts in the past about lan gaming and the studdering problem but if it was resolved, nobody told us of how it was done. We assumed it was a hardware issue with his switch but never found out.
    Good Luck.

When i played on LANs some time ago we had this setup:

Just regular switch no router or Internet access.

If you LAN has Internet access it will probably need editing of the inis as mentioned in articles that Lawless linked to. I think the fact that when a LAN has Inet it can cause lag but that is just my guess as a LAN with Inet has a gateway and when a gateway is present the game will try to verify the CD-KEY, if the gateway isn't there it can't access Inet and it will just time out and the editing of the inis probably isn't necessary.

I'm assuming you just wan't to create a LAN with no Inet:

Run XP Network Wizard on machine, and select the LAN config that is LAN without Internet and make sure you are in same Workgroup.

Then assign IPs manually in the TCP/IP settings:

    e.g.
    PC1:
    IP: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    No gateway or anything.

    PC2:
    IP:192.168.0.3
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    etc.

You only need TCP/IP for gaming, but if you like you can enable, File and Printer Sharing and Client For MS Network.

In the WINS options you might have to enable NETBIOS if you want the File shaing to work etc.

Restart Windows. It will only ask to reboot if you changed e.g. Workgroup name, but reboot anyway, and re-check settings when in Win again.

I have no problem downloading the pdf in the thread you link to.
