I set up a mission where i am flying against an average pilot who is using the F14 with the AIM54.Having a hard time getting the aim54 to miss me..tried locking this guy up and then flying a "S" shape to the edge of the radar gimbal limits to break his lock/missle lock and trying to edge closer to him to fire my em...however when i beam his radar/missle i lose lock and SA and end up getting in the path of his second missle...i have watched the ironhand videos and with this info can take on the F15...but i can't seem to get inside the F14's envelope to make him turn with my missle shot...once i get his nose turned i can usually get the kill, but how can i avoid the missle and get him locked up and eliminated? If i beam him/missle by the time the first missle misses the second and third are on the way and my air speed/altitude are gone...and it's the silk elevator for me. i used a wingman this am, which worked, but one vs one is my problem...i know the aim54 is not generally used against a target that is highly manueverable, which obvioulsy i am not....Also i set this mission up with an "excellent" pilot flying for me against this "average" pilot and the "excellent" pilot got waxed..my aircraft in the mission is the SU33

well, experimented and here's what i did..first not panic when he shoots...watch for the missle using the missle padlock key and when it's about 6km away execute a quick roll and pop counter measures...also remembering what bearing he was on from me, so when i evaded i could put my nose on him to lock up and shoot...once i can get a shot with an em he will turn his nose and then it's adios F14...but had to practice this and got killed plenty of times b4 it worked...also made a mission recording of this and then edited it using the Control E key to get an outside view of what the missle did when i rolled or turned away and rolled while popping countermeasure...on one roll i didn't use countermeasures...ironhand videos don't show counter measures..hope this helps others out..as Kon and others have said...practice is the key........

i tried to take on the f-14a and foxbat. they both have long range missiles. it's very hard to evade them and get inside their envelope. i use the f move evade the first, but get hit buy the second. when i get my nose up on them to take my second shot i get hit! once u get inside the envelope u must close the range to make the r 37 and the 54c non useful. make it a dogfight! what do u think of my plan?

Well i don't know whether it was blind luck or not, but the other day i kept pretty much pointed at the F14 and would wait until the missles were 7km away and roll and pop countermeasure...this way i was getting closer to him so i could fire an em to get him to turn his nose away and he did and he ate dirt. BUT, i ate dirt plenty of times b4 that so the score is F14 25, M881 2.......making it a dogfight sounds pretty good, because he is hosed without a HMD

i was fighting against the f-14 and i was winning everytime. the secret is to break back into the missiles path without breaking your lock. when u are diving(left or right). it takes the 54c 30sec to hit u. when u reach 20 to 25sec break back into the 54c path. KEEP YOUR LOCK! then fire off your shot and keep pressure on the f-14. i use the F move. your way is good too. where do u fly? UBI or hyper lobby?

Just read this thread, and it makes me miss LOMAC. I have not flown for about 2.5 years now. Many reasons, but I hope to return to the virtual skies soon. m8881, I highly recommend that you get online; maybe even join a squadron. There are people who will help you,and welcome you. I found Hyperlobby to be a great place to fly, though I mainly flew IL2 there. I joined a squadron (and stay in touch). No one expects a noob to be "all that" and few, if any, are masters right off, imho. Some key benefits of online squadron life are: commeraderie, practice missions, shared knowledge base about the sim(s), and so forth.
Finally, for me flying offline was OK, but nothing beats the thrill of having your mates with you as you go up against real life humans in the virtual skies! even adversaries become friends! Get in there!!

    Q:
Where/ how do I fly online?

    A:

The first thing to understand is that your version of LOMAC MUST match the host's version. If you have vanilla LOMAC 1.00-1.02- which is typical if you just got the game- you won't be able to fly in the rooms that use "Flaming Cliffs" with the latest patch- 1.12.

If you want to have the very best online experience -you really need to upgrade to "Flaming cliffs" "FC" not only opens the door to the vast majority of online pilots- but the game itself is dramatically different.

Thing is- you can fly in 1.02 online, but you're making a mistake if you stay there long. There have been so many changes to the different planes you'll quite literally be practicing and learning the WRONG information on many different subjects. New key commands, & a totally re- done jamming environment to name a couple.

I'm reluctant to fly online with the sharks..

I can appreciate that, but the very BEST place to fly online is the Hyperlobby. As a new pilot- you might feeling pretty green going in there. The BIG primary rooms are usually set up with none of the low difficulty features enabled.

    Let go of your fear.

Just try it. You're not going to get picked on, impugned or any of that. Flying on "ACE" settings is the goal- we want to teach you.

Don't misunderstand. There's nothing wrong with putting up a room with the nugget features turned on once in a while to help welcome new guys or train, or whatever. There are a lot of people there that will host a room with externals, etc if you ask.

Don't take encouragement to GIVE UP THE NOOB FEATURES as "harassment." That's ridiculous. We're trying to teach you and these things- while they have a limited role- will eventually stunt your growth. The "map" view is not how you learn to navigate and find your targets. You don't learn to avoid missiles or take out vehicles hiding in the hills using labels.

Most of us will help any way we can. You can help yourself a LOT by getting on a communications channel that the server or your erm.. instructor.. has. That usually means TeamSpeak or Ventrilo- which can be downloaded on my main site in the downloads section. You've got to understand that trying to train someone new via the chat function is plain tiring. Help us to help you- get on comms before you press FLY.

You also need to make an effort to learn some things on your own too. Print off the key commands & lay them out in front of you. Read the various forums, visit the official & fan sites and yes- read the manual. No, not the whole thing at once. Show some initiative. Practice, study, and ask questions. If you like a particular group of guys/ gals in a squadron, and you can dedicate some time to being on a team, consider joining that squad permanently.

Be ready to be interviewed & evaluated. Not so much for your skills, but rather for the level of your dedication.

Q: Am I ready to click on the FLY button? (multiplayer)

A: A quick pre-flight checklist common to all.

    1. Have I gotten on the appropriate Teamspeak channel?

    2. Is my stick & track IR running with the correct profiles?

    3. Have I read the briefing of the mission, and/or reviewed the map of the mission area?

    4. Do I know where to go, my purpose, and how to get home?

    5. Do I have the loadout that I need for my role? (make sure that NO illegal weapons are loaded) Click "save" (payload screen) if lit after changes.

    6. Go.
