Thread: sh4 crash upon startup - black screen after load | Forums

  1. #1
    Hi everyone.

I couldn't find any solution to this problem myself, and I couldn't find a thread here that could help me either, so now I'm just throwing it out there:

I have had Silent Hunter 4 for some time, and it worked perfectly the alst time I played it.
So I was stunned when I dug it up and tried to play it again, and the game crashed:

I start up the game, it shows the 2 movies and all is fine. But then the game load-screen comes up and when the load is complete the screen goes black, with no error-message or anything.
I can only get back to me desktop by ctrl+alt+del. The game shows up in my taskbar as "not answering"

    My PC specs:
    Intel P4 3,00 gHz
    3 gb RAM
nVidia Geforce 7950, with 512 Mb RAM
    Win XP

I have already updated the game to 1.4, my drivers (graphics, soundcard and directX) and reinstalling the game several times.

Btw, I noticed that when I open the vanilla version of the game I CAN get into the menu, but all the "options" is written on top of each other in the top left corner, and I'm only able to click on the "exit to desktop" option.

Any help is more than welcome

Greetings, rafhama. Welcome to the SHIV Forums.

I have a question and a couple of suggestions.

First is your vanilla copy SHIV on a disk or did you download it?

It sound to me like something has become corrupted because of not installing correctly or was corrupted before installation

I would suggest d/ling the v1.4 patch again and then try reinstalling the game again. Try the v1.4 patch from here. Post back with your results.

hi,and thx for responding so quickly.
my game is from a disc (retail) version, and is completely legit. It's a bit scratchy, but it cant be a corruption issue on the disc, since I installed the game on my fathers PC, and it runs perfectly, vanilla and 1.4...

And I already tried ur suggestions for 3-4 times, reinstalling, and redownloading from several different places...

But right now I'm about to format my computer, since I've had kind of the same problems with other games before, and a good ol'e format:C has always done the trick

I'll get back to u with the results

so, now I've formated my PC and everything works fine...
I still don't know what causes this problem, but it seems that a messy windows-folder and C-drive somehow confused the game...

    but now it works
    now to the sea!!! xD

I have the same problem! I didn't play a game few months, and when i installed again, black screen shows up!
The one thing I can think off is SP3 install for xp (which was installed in the meantime).

Does something else do the trick except "format c:"?

At least, we know that "format c:" is not an answer...

    Did you try http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6921019045/m/9...871006386#9871006386

I have an ATI graphics card, and I am missing these options mentioned above :-(

Do anybody know what this stands for in main.cfg:

    Resolution=1680,1050,60,22

Ok, first three I understand, resolution and frequency, but what "22" means?

I've not tried the thing you mentioned yet, but I probably will do so tomorrow or the day after. I'll update you on its effect.

    (bump)
