I am thinking of changing my CPU cooler because the present one does not seem to be working very well. I have a FX-55 and under load it gets up to 66 Degree C.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Here are three of the best cpu air coolers on the market. Just be mindful of their size and make sure they are compatible with your mobo as far as clearance around your cpu.

Looking at these makes me so happy I am water cooling. Just the sheer size and weight of these monsters are enough to scare the bejeez out of me.

I had a Thermalright XP90 on my Athlon64 (to aid with overclocking my lowly 3200). The problem I found was that the XP90 obscured the exhaust fans of my case and the hot air just collected such that cooling performance was only about as good as the stock AMD heatsink. The XP120 being much larger would surely cause more of an obstruction - just something to bear in mind.

The other 2 linked should pose less of a problem since they are mounted in a way that pushes air out towards the rear exhaust fans.

I can recommend THIS ONE.

I put one of these on a month or so ago and it is awesome. Especially for the money!

Choosing a cooler is a very daunting task. There are just so many to choose from.

I'm using the one in Quazi's first link.

I highly recommend it, running stock 3700+ I idle @ 32C, after a couple of hours of IL2 it will be around 38C.

Quiet too .

Can be a bit fiddly to fit, check mobo compatibility first.

The standard AMD heatsink and fan does quite a good job in my setup.Ive an Opteron 146 @2.76GHz which is almost FX57 speeds.I reckon you should examine your case airflow and the thermal paste you use .Definitely use Arctic Silver 5 and not the stock paste/pad.If you want to kill an hour you can 'lap' your heatsink ie sand it mirror smooth with wet n dry and polishing paste.(While youre at it do the same for the chipset heat sink)
But I really think the heatsink and fan itself isnt your main problem .Worth checking out!

The top two are:

1: Tuniq Tower, this one is THE best but is extremely hard to find

2: Thermaltake Big Typhoon, this is second best and is easily found. Works very good stock but really shines when the stock fan is replaced with a high (100+) CFM fan.

Gotta say it. I'm using the first in Quazi's post and it does an excellent job.

Specially since its cooling a P4 northy 2.4 running at 3.38.

Its a world apart from my last cooler, Coolermaster Jet4. The jet4 did pretty much the same job at cooling but sounded just as bad as a jet!!!
